Physiographic development of the surface of the earth refers to the landforms and shapes of the landscape. These surface features are subject to continuous change from constructive (e.g., uplift, volcanic activity, and deposition of sediments) and destructive (e.g., erosion) processes. Landform modifications are continuous and sequential. These modifications establish a predictable continuity that can be helpful in determining certain aspects of relative geologic ages. [Pg.242]

The Crimean shelf extends from Cape Khersones in the west to Cape Meganom in the east. It is widest off Cape Sarych (35-40 km) and narrowest off Cape Ayu Dag (5 km) [1,2]. This region is subjected to intensive wave action because it is exposed to all the southerly winds. The boundary of the underwater coastal slope is located at depths of 30-40 m. The near-shore zone is the area of alongshore sediment transport and smoothing of the bottom topography. The prominent niobium and lead spikes of continental materials are not matched by any of the OIBs and MORBs reviewed here. They are, however, common features of subduction-related volcanic rocks found on island arcs and continental margins. It is therefore likely that the distinctive geochemical features of the continental crust are produced during subduction, where volatiles can play a major role in the element transfer from mantle to crust. The net effect of these processes is to transfer large amounts of lead (in addition to mobile elements like potassium and rubidium) into the crust. At the same time, niobium and tantalum are retained in the mantle, either because of their low solubility in hydrothermal solutions, or because they are partitioned into residual mineral phases such as Ti-minerals or certain amphiboles. These processes are the subject of much ongoing research, but are beyond the scope of this chapter. [Pg.794]

Volcanic activity. Volcanic activity includes atmospheric dust, ash, and lava flows. The relationship of atmospheric volcanic dust to quantitative mineral inputs is not known, but a review of the subject indicates that this mineral source is not generally significant from an agricultural standpoint (Lamb, 1970). Recent volcanic ash deposition and lava flows can make sizable contributions of minerals to soils on a localized basis. Maximum involvement in this respect concerns land areas bordering on or occurring as islands in the Pacific Ocean. [Pg.523]

Based on this definition, the first documented case of air pollution occurred in 1272 when thousands of people died as a result of volcanic ash. During the early to mid-1900s, several air pollution episodes resulted in either unacceptable illness levels or death. For instance, in 1948 the mill town of Donora, PA, was subjected to a 4-day fog from the uncontrolled steel mill emissions reacting with other constituents in the atmosphere.
