Subject polymeric liquids

The rapid growth of the number of publications concerning polymeric liquid crystals indicates that we should expect the appearance of new fundamental studies on the transition of rigid- and semirigid-chain polymers into this state. The range of moderately concentrated solutions for these polymers is studied sufficiently well, while the development of the methods of establishing the liquid. crystalline state in superconcentrated systems and in pure polymers with semirigid chains, as well as the analysis of kinetics of phase transitions, are the subject for further theoretical and experimental works. [Pg.99]

A number of fluids mentioned throughout the text that are of importance in physicochemical hydrodynamics do not behave in the Newtonian fashion outlined in Section 2.2. That is, the stress tensor is not a linear function of the rate of strain tensor. Such nonlinear fluids are termed non-Newtonian and the study of their behavior falls under the science of rheology, which deals with the study of the deformation and flow of matter. The materials encompassed by this broad subject cover a spectrum from Newtonian fluids at one end to elastic materials at the other with such fluids as tars, liquid crystals, and silly putty in between. Today we call this time-dependent response viscoelasticity. It is typical of all polymeric materials. Another common way to measure the phenomenon is by stress relaxation. As illustrated in Figure 3.1.2, when a polymeric liquid is subject to a step increase in strain, the stress relaxes in an exponential fashion.
