Subject infection prevalence

Hepatitis A vaccination is indicated for active immunisation against hepatitis A virus (HAV) infection in subjects at risk of exposure to HAV such as travellers to high prevalence areas, armed force personnel travelling to high endemic areas, person in whom... [Pg.440]

In a multicenter, randomized, double-blind, 12-week trial in Australia and New Zealand, 384 patients with dementia, mainly Alzheimer s disease, were initially enrolled and received at least one dose of risperidone (n = 167 71% women mean age 83 years modal dose 0.99 mg/day) or placebo (n = 170 72% women mean age 83 years) (47). Clinical improvement in aggression and psychotic symptoms was evidenced by means of specific scales 45 subjects taking risperidone and 56 taking placebo did not complete the trial, mainly because of insufficient responses and adverse effects. In the whole sample there was a high prevalence and variety of adverse events (94% of those taking risperidone and 92% of those taking placebo), mainly injuries, falls, somnolence, and urinary tract infections however, only the last two were more common in those taking risperidone than in those... [Pg.338]

Obesity is associated with impaired immunity (Fried et al, 1998 Tanaka et al, 1993 Visser et al, 1999) and as suggested by Ekesbo et al. (2000) obesity might be the indicator for increased susceptibility to H. pylori and CP infection (Ekesbo et al., 2000). However, Dart et al. (2002) found no preponderance of antibodies to Chlamydia trachomatis and Chlamydia pssit-taci in the same subject population. Lack of relationship of BMI with prevalence of antibodies to C. trachomatis and C. pssittaci indicated that increased BMI did not necessarily predispose the subjects to catch infection. Experiments with animal models designed to investigate the adipogenic potential of CP and human sero-epidemiological data are needed to further determine the role of CP in obesity. [Pg.78]

Prevalence of Ad-36 antibodies in human population may vary by the geographic locations. Only 5% of the subjects screened in Denmark had antibodies to Ad-36 (Raben et al., 2001). Ad-36 is the first human virus reported to show an association with human obesity. Due to ethical reasons, it is not possible to infect humans with a virus, which precludes unequivocal demonstration of causative role of Ad-36 in human obesity. Future experiments are likely to generate indirect and circumstantial evidence. [Pg.89]

Shortness of breath, wheezing and cough are the classical triad of asthmatic symptoms. The symptoms are often most prevalent at night or early in the morning and may be episodic or daily depending on the severity of the disease. Association between symptoms and exposure to allergens, irritants, exercise and viral infections often occurs. The classical symptoms might not be present, especially in subjects with poor perception of breathlessness (Veen et al. 1998). [Pg.53]
