The climate in which the questionnaire was used might raise concern about interpretation of the results. For example, subjects who wished (for whatever reason) to misrepresent the nature and severity of their problems could distort the results (and hence their interpretation), especially if their chemical-test group was fairly small. In addition, as in any cohort study, there was no control of the subjects environments after discharge from the service, so even legitimate complaints associated with exposure to toxic substances could have been due to occupational or accidental exposure to chemical agents, rather than to exposure at Edgewood. [Pg.84]

Perform a fluid flow simulation using the tabular input from step five. Just as the flow field itself, the results of this simulation are a single realization. Repeating steps 2-6 will lead to a distribution of results from which one may estimate the risk inherent in the flow process in the subject environment. [Pg.54]

The pressure equipment directive was adopted by the European Parliament and the European Council in May 1997. It harmonises the national laws of the 15 Member States of the European Union relating to equipment subject to the pressure risk. That directive is one of the series of technical harmonisation directives such as for machinery, medical devices, simple pressure vessels, gas appliances and so on, which were foreseen by the Communities programme for the elimination of technical barriers to trade. It therefore aims to ensure the free placing on the market and putting into service of the equipment concerned within the European Union and the European Economic Area. At the same time it permits a flexible regulatory environment, allowing European industry to develop new techniques increasing thereby its international competitiveness. [Pg.937]

Corrosion fatigue is a type of failure (cracking) which occurs when a metal component is subjected to cyclic stress in a corrosive medium. In many cases, relatively mild environments (e.g., atmospheric moisture) can greatly enhance fatigue cracking without producing visible corrosion. [Pg.2732]

Most aquaculture faciUties release water constandy or periodically into the environment without passing it through a municipal sewage treatment plant. The effects of those efduents on natural systems have become a subject of intense scmtiny in recent years and have, in some instances, resulted in opposition to further development of aquaculture faciUties in some locales. There have even been demands that some existing operations should be shut down. [Pg.20]

The various chemical and physical processes that play a role ia the deterioration of art objects are not restricted to the present, even though the contemporary environment has contributed significantly to the rate of decay. Revered masterpieces have lost splendor throughout the ages. Indeed, from textual evidence, it is known how artists ia the Renaissance restored works of art from Classical times. These restorers of past centuries attempted to return the object to its original appearance. The fallacy of that idea Hes ia the fact that they could not know the exact original appearance of the work, ie, immediately after its creation therefore, they restored the object according to their subjective opinions. [Pg.424]

AH components of the reaction mixture, whatever their source, are subject to the same kind of radical attacks as the starting substrate(s). Any free-radical oxidation is inevitably a cooxidation of substrate(s) and products. The yields of final products are deterrnined by two factors (/) how much is produced in the reaction sequence, and (2) how much product survives the reaction environment. By kinetic correlations and radiotracer techniques, it is... [Pg.335]

Sur cia.1 Deposits. Uraniferous surficial deposits maybe broadly defined as uraniferous sediments, usually of Tertiary to recent age which have not been subjected to deep burial and may or may not have been calcified to some degree. The uranium deposits associated with calcrete, which occur in Australia, Namibia, and Somaha in semiarid areas where water movement is chiefly subterranean, are included in this type. Additional environments for uranium deposition include peat and bog, karst caverns, as well as pedogenic and stmctural fills (15). [Pg.185]
