Subject drying

Published research in the area of reaction spinning has been somewhat limited. The principal papers to date are the work of Pohl [78] and Fok et al. [79]. Mention should also be made of the work done on postspinning treatment of fibers. This type of process, widely used for high-temperature fibers [80-83], consists of subjecting dry- or wet-spun fibers of a given polymer to time and temperature to bring about a reaction that takes the material to another polymer compound. This process is used because the final high-temperature polymer is either infusible or insoluble or both. [Pg.433]

Metallic sodium. This metal is employed for the drying of ethers and of saturated and aromatic hydrocarbons. The bulk of the water should first be removed from the liquid or solution by a preliminary drying with anhydrous calcium chloride or magnesium sulphate. Sodium is most effective in the form of fine wire, which is forced directly into the liquid by means of a sodium press (see under Ether, Section II,47,i) a large surface is thus presented to the liquid. It cannot be used for any compound with which it reacts or which is affected by alkalis or is easily subject to reduction (due to the hydrogen evolved during the dehydration), viz., alcohols, acids, esters, organic halides, ketones, aldehydes, and some amines. [Pg.143]

Unlike ion-selective electrodes using glass membranes, crystalline solid-state ion-selective electrodes do not need to be conditioned before use and may be stored dry. The surface of the electrode is subject to poisoning, as described earlier for a Ck ISE in contact with an excessive concentration of Br. When this happens, the electrode can be returned to its original condition by sanding and polishing the crystalline membrane. [Pg.482]

Guar gum [9000-30-0] derived from the seed of a legume (11,16), is used as a flocculant in the filtration of mineral pulps leached with acid or cyanide for the recovery of uranium and gold (16). It is also used as a retention aid, usually in a chemically modified form (14,17). Starch and guar gum are subject to biological degradation in solution, so they are usually sold as dry powders that are dissolved immediately before use. Starch requires heating in most cases to be fully dissolved. [Pg.32]

The gas, along with entrained ash and char particles, which are subjected to further gasification in the large space above the fluid bed, exit the gasifier at 954—1010°C. The hot gas is passed through a waste-heat boiler to recover the sensible heat, and then through a dry cyclone. SoHd particles are removed in both units. Mitsubishi Chemical Industries, Ltd. practiced a Henkel II technology starting with toluene to produce benzoic acid. Reaction of benzoic acid with potassium hydroxide resulted in potassium benzoate, which was subjected to a disproportionation reaction to produce dipotassium terephthalate and benzene. Dipotassium terephthalate reacted with sulfuric acid, and the resulting terephthahc acid was recovered by filtration and drying (65,66). Here, dipotassium sulfate was the by-product. [Pg.488]
