Subgroups definition

Nowhere is the effect of anthropogenic stress felt more than in the development of natural resources of the Earth. Natural resources are varied in nature and often require definition. Eor example, in relation to mineral resources, for which there is also descriptive nomenclature (ASTM C294), the terms related to the available quantities of the resource must be defined. In this instance, the term resource refers to the total amount of the mineral that has been estimated to be available ultimately. The term reserves refers to well-identified resources that can profitably be extracted and utilized by means of existing technology. In many countries, fossil fuel resources are often classified as a subgroup of the total mineral resources. 

If a lack of homogeneity is seen, the next step is to try to understand why. Clearly, by definition, the studies that have been combined have different protocols and by looking at important features of the studies that reflect those differences, it may be possible to form subgroups of trials that are homogeneous. 

The basis of the UNIFAC approach is the definition of submolecular groups (e.g., CH2, CH3, CH3O, CH2CI, OH) and the fitting of a given molecular property or activity coefficient to a sum of contributions based on the subgroup molecular volume and interaction terms between the groups.

In a randomized controlled trial conducted by Nemoto et al, 98 patients were assigned to either conventional treatment or PMX B (Nemoto et al., 2001). The overall survival was significantly better in the treated group. When looking at subgroups, the authors concluded that this therapeutic approach was more likely to improve survival when applied earlier in sepsis. One criticism of this conclusion is that the subgroups contained a low number of patients to make a definitive statement in this regard.
