Stuffer-box crimping

Texturing. The final step in olefin fiber production is texturing the method depends primarily on the appHcation. For carpet and upholstery, the fiber is usually bulked, a procedure in which fiber is deformed by hot air or steam jet turbulence in a no22le and deposited on a moving screen to cool. The fiber takes on a three-dimensional crimp that aids in developing bulk and coverage in the final fabric. Stuffer box crimping, a process in which heated tow is overfed into a restricted oudet box, imparts a two-dimensional sawtooth crimp commonly found in olefin staple used in carded nonwovens and upholstery yams. [Pg.319]

False-twist texturing depends on setting fibers in a kind geometry and then changing to another, which generates elongation that can be recovered by bulking. Another method is to set fibers in the required crimped form. This was the basis for stuffer-box and other methods. [Pg.62]

Stuffer box n. A mechanism for crimping in which a fiber bundle (e.g., tow or filament yarn) is jammed against itself, causing it to crimp. By the suitable application of heat (usually wet steam) and pressure to the stuffed tow, a high and permanent crimp can be forced into the bundle. [Pg.937]

Hlament to be used as a staple fiber is cut into similar length and similar crimp as found in natural fibers (cotton and wool) to allow it to be processed on the existing textile machinery. For crimp, the large tows or bundles of filaments, prior to cutting into staple, is fed between two wheels, which in turn force it into a chamber (stuffer box) heated with steam, in which the tow is forced against the compacted material ahead of it. This causes the straight filaments to collapse and then escape, axially distorted or crimped, at the opposite end of the chamber. [Pg.196]

Crimping is performed on the stuffer box. The crimper serves to impart a sinusoidal or sawtoothshaped crimp to the tow. Crimping is accomplished... [Pg.784]

The primary purpose of crimping is to make individual filaments adhere to each other, while secondary crimping ensures cohesion of the tow itself. The shape and number of crimps per centimeter are influenced by the following parameters roller pressure, stuffer box pressure, design and geometry, and fiber density in the stuffer box. The MW, MWD, and isotactic content of the polymer affects crimp stability, amplitude, and ease of crimping. For optimum adjustment of the crimping parameters, trials must be run under simulated production conditions. [Pg.784]

Stuffer box method The crimping unit consists of two feed roUs and a brass tube stuffer box. By compressing the yam into the heated stuffer box, the individual filaments are caused to fold or bend at a sharp angle, while being simultaneously set by a heating device. [Pg.45]
