Case Studies Solid Speciation of Metals in River Sediments 

Apart from these and other studies on metal partitioning of river sediments, which are aimed for the identification of the major binding sites of trace elements, sequential extraction procedures on river sediments has been applied for the following objectives  

The typical effects of the earliest stages of diagenesis (involving transformations of organic matter, aging of mineral components and formation of new equilibria between solid and dissolved species) have been demonstrated by Salomons (1980) with respect to the behaviour of trace metals at the sediment/seawater interface (Table 3-5). 

Adsorption time 1 day 3 days 8 days 24 days 60 days 

Desorption was studied by adding cadmium and zinc to suspended matter in river water after adsorbing periods of 1, 3, 8, 24 and 60 days,
