Tsaparlis and Gorezi (2005,2007) have proposed the addition of a project-based component to a conventional expository physical chemistry laboratory. Project-type tasks were used, mainly taken from articles in the Journal of Chemical Education. Dming the performance of the project experiments, students were dedicated, patient and enthusiastic. The writing of the report and the oral presentation of the project were very demanding tasks. The evaluation of the work by the students through... [Pg.114]

You should evaluate your students preparation for the physical chemistry course. Most people agree that today s students are less well prepared than students of a few decades ago, but the students still come to you with widely varying preparation and abilities both in mathematics and in chemistry. Furthermore, their proposed career paths do not necessarily correlate with their preparation. I found it helpful to pass out a take-home orientation quiz on the first day of class. This quiz contained a few mathematics problems, a few physics and chemistry questions, a request for a list of all of the science and mathematics courses taken, and a request for a statement of the student s proposed career. Analysis of the students responses could be used in planning the course. [Pg.30]

Astrid M.W. Bulte is a researcher in science education connected to the Centre for Science and Mathematics Education at Utrecht University, the Netherlands. In her current position she focuses on the development and evaluation of science modules for secondary education. As a teacher trainer, she contributes to the training of student teachers in chemistry and biology, teaching how to communicate science issues. In her former position, she was a teacher in physics and chemistry in secondary education. In her formal education as a Chemical Engineering Scientist (both Masters and PhD), she... [Pg.409]

The attitudes are described oti the basis of students self-evaluation of their affective states toward physical chemistry. We rely on students self-reports, as they... [Pg.302]

It is plausible to suggest that evaluations of textbooks based on a historical reconstruction, constitute a stepping-stone for further classroom studies to evaluate the effect of including criteria presented here to improve students understanding of wave-particle duality. Besides the criteria, this study provides science teachers with 26 Satisfactory (S) presentations (with extensive excerpts) based on 128 general chemistry textbooks. In their textbook. Physics, the Human Adventure, Holton and Bmsh (2001) have endorsed such strategies in unequivocal terms ... [Pg.30]
