Strongylocentrotus intermedius

In the sixties, however, sialoglycolipids were found in the tissues of some invertebrates, the sea urchins Arbacia punctuata,64 Pseudocentrotus depressus,6S and Strongylocentrotus intermedius.66 These compounds were soon found in other species belonging to the phylum Echinodermata, and their systematic study began.

Two new diterpenic glycosides, virescenosides M 9 and N 10, were isolated from the marine fungus Acremonium striatisporum KMM 4401 which was associated with the holothurian Eupentacta fraudatrix. They both exhibited cytotoxic action against tumor cells of Ehrlich carcinoma in vitro, and showed a cytotoxic effect on developing eggs of the sea urchin Strongylocentrotus intermedius. 

Screening of the antitumor activity of extracts of the intestine of Strongylocentrotus intermedius of Japanese origin (Hokkaido) led to the isolation of 3 -sulfoquinovosyl-l -monoacylglycerides whose origin is probably algae and diatoms from the diet (Sahara et al., 1997).
