Strengthening of materials

Strengthening of materials by fine particles is frequently obtained by precipitation hardening. This process will now be explained, using the example of the alloy system aluminium-copper. [Pg.213]

Other complex processes present themselves the interaction of dislocations with each other and other crystal defects. Fig. 15 shows an example of twin boundary that can be grown on a specially designed template. Such boundaries are known to be very effective in the strengthening of materials [45], and colloidal crystals again offer an opportunity to observe the interaction between boundary and dislocation (pileup, decomposition, transmission,. ..) in a unique, direct fashion. Perhaps the most complex plastic deformation is that of amorphous materials. Here, the hard-sphere colloidal glasses allow direct observation of the local shear transformations that govern the plastic flow of these materials. That hard spheres make such... [Pg.259]

A variety of materials has been proposed to modify the properties of asphaltic binders to enhance the properties of the mix (112), including fillers and fibers to reinforce the asphalt—aggregate mixture (114), sulfur to strengthen or harden the binder (115,116), polymers (98,117—121), mbber (122), epoxy—resin composites (123), antistripping agents (124), metal complexes (125,126), and lime (127,128). AH of these additives serve to improve the properties of the binder and, ultimately, the properties of the asphalt—aggregate mix. [Pg.373]

Aesthetic dental ceramics are essentially glass-matrix materials with varying volume fractions of crystalline fillers. Crystalline fillers are used in the glass matrix both for dispersion strengthening, usually at volume fractions of 40—70%, and for altering optical properties, usually at low volume fractions. Dental ceramics are generally manufactured from two distinct classes of materials, ie, beneficiated feldspathic minerals and glass—ceramics. [Pg.471]

Aging (extended exposure to an elevated temperature) of an austenitic alloy can strengthen the material and increase its resistance to damage. Thus such alloys can be... [Pg.268]

A high modulus gradient at the interface is also be avoided in materials Joined as a result of the interdiffusion of materials to form a fractal surface [32]. The effect is to produce an interfacial composite region. This strengthens the interface and leads to a more gradual change in modulus and avoids the sharp concentrations of stress which would occur at a smooth interface. [Pg.345]

Equations (3.84) and (3.85) can be solved for the critical that must be exceeded to obtain fiber strengthening of the composite material ... [Pg.166]

In the presence of an inert gas, such as He or Ar, crosslinking can be introduced into the surface layer of material by plasma treatment. Hansen and Schon-horn [60] named this Crosslinking by Activated Species of Inert Gases (CASING). As a result, bond strength is enhanced because crosslinking strengthens the surface layer. [Pg.825]

Chapters 9 and 10 while in this chapter we concentrate on cell-cell structures and their organic chemical communication and the very simple nerve networks between senses and muscles. At the same time a complicated series of organs became involved in intake, synthesis, distribution of material and waste excretion so as to supply suitable material with energy to the whole body and remove excess chemicals. Probably to protect and strengthen the structures, the invertebrates developed external shells but it is only with the arrival of vertebrates, animals with bones, that great internal structural strength with mobility evolved (see Figure 8.6 and Table 8.3). [Pg.326]

There is also a significant drawback the inherently higher fuel permeability of polymers. The strengthening of environmental regulations (PZEV Partial Zero Emission Vehicle) leads to severe requirements concerning fuel impermeability, needing modification of the techniques now in use. Moreover, some carmakers such as Ford and GM require higher mechanical and thermal resistance, and conductive materials. [Pg.96]

Nuclear evolution precedes and determines the evolution of life, and is itself preceded by the evolution of elementary particles. Such is the great scheme of material things. The idea of universal unity can only be strengthened by this knowledge. In this physical genesis, the star plays a crucial intermediate role between the Big Bang and life, and for this reason we owe it our closest attention. [Pg.220]

This complex form of precipitation in the Al-Cu system is of great practical importance. The finely dispersed precipitates act as effective barriers to the glide movement of dislocations during plastic deformation and harden and strengthen the material. This has led to the development of a number of widely used precipitation-hardened Al-Cu alloys [1]. [Pg.561]
