Strategic Research Targets

Under a joint call on biorefineries, the EC funded a specific support action, the Star-COLWRI project (Strategic Research Targets for 2020 - Collaboration Initiative on Biorefineries). 

A number of strategic research topics were pursued for fuel cell systems in the EU funded projects, ranging from basic research to validation and demonstration activities for gaining field experience . All activities were targeting systems which could be commercially viable by 2020 for many applications, with focus on the high temperature technologies (mainly Solid Oxide, SOFC) and...

No specific priorities and targets have been set at a national level for hydrogen and fuel cells. Priorities and targets have until recently been set at the level of each research or industrial "unit" and were most often driven bythe availability of funds and not to meet strategic objectives. Hydrogen and fuel cells have, however, been included in recent national R D programs. 

In this Chapter, we provide an overview of the various aldol control elements available for achieving synthetically useful stereoselectivity and then analyze some representative syntheses of polyketide natural products (particularly macro-lide targets) which are based primarily on the strategic use of aldol chemistry. These examples are chosen to illustrate the variety of aldol processes that have been applied to structurally complex targets and are taken largely from the recent literature (1989-1999). This selection covers some of our own research along with important contributions from other groups.
