Strap muscles

In a strap muscle there is little connective tissue within the muscle since most is concentrated in tendons at the end. Such muscles produce the tenderest meat fillet steak is the psoas muscle of a cow. Pennate muscles contain more connective tissue within the muscle itself and hence form the cheaper cuts of meat. [Pg.277]

The electrical output of the muscle increases greatly when the high pitched noise is performed. When the patient is asked to elevate his head from the table, only distant electrical activity should be seen (strap muscles distant activity). [Pg.313]

Tendon—strap of tissue that connects muscle to bone, providing for movement. [Pg.460]

Embryonal primitive spindled, stellate, round, and polygonal cells in variably myxoid background. Variable rhabdomyoblasts, strap cells, multinucleated cells, and myotube forms. Embryonal myogenin, Myo-DI, muscle-specific actin, desmin. Loss of heterozygosity at 11 pi 5.5 and other nonspecific abnormalities. [Pg.664]

The quadriceps is the strongest muscle in the body. This can be demonstrated by performing an isometric knee-extension exercise. Here, the subject is seated comfortably in a Cybex or Biodex dynamometer with the torso and thigh strapped firmly to the seat. The hip is flexed to 60°, and the leg is strapped to the arm of the machine, which can be either fixed or allowed to rotate at a constant angular velocity (see Fig. 6.24). Locking the machine arm in place allows the muscles crossing the... [Pg.165]

Hemipelvectomy Prostheses. The prosthesis for an individual witfi a hemipelvectomy is similar to that of the hip disarticulation prosthesis. However, the residuum of an individual with a hemipelvectomy no longer contains the ischial tuberosity. The socket must therefore provide distal support solely through the soft tissues. To minimize soft tissue pressures, the socket may extend more proximally using the iliac crest, distal ribs, and gluteal muscles for support. Suspension may be augmented by shoulder straps. This prosthesis is typically endoskeletal so as to minimize the weight of the prosthesis. [Pg.898]

If EKG s are recorded in a Faraday-shielded room using shielded lead wires, records as shown in Figure 10.1c,d can be obtained. Note the absence of 60-Hz interference. In Figure 10. Id, leads I and III exhibit thickening, but this results from muscle tremor signals. The source is the left arm, since this limb is common to both leads. Apparently the strap which anchored the left wrist electrode was too tight, and some EMG signals were produced. [Pg.226]

In the sporting goods industry, considered here as in the health field, there is appreciable use of strapping tapes designed to prevent injury as well as to support injured joints or muscles. These athletic tapes, with deformable cloth backings to facilitate ease of wrapping and easy tear, must also have adhesive masses that permit facile removal. The sports industry also consumes tapes for wrapping hockey stick blades and baseball bat handles. [Pg.659]
