It was reahzed quite some decades ago that the amount of information accumulated by chemists can, in the long run, be made accessible to the scientific community only in electronic form in other words, it has to be stored in databases. This new field, which deals with the storage, the manipulation, and the processing of chemical information, was emerging without a proper name. In most cases, the scientists active in the field said they were working in "Chemical Information . However, as this term did not make a distinction between librarianship and the development of computer methods, some scientists said they were working in "Computer Chemistry to stress the importance they attributed to the use of the computer for processing chemical information. However, the latter term could easily be confused with Computational Chemistry, which is perceived by others to be more limited to theoretical quantum mechanical calculations. [Pg.4]

Ammonia is corrosive to akoys of copper and zinc and these materials must not be used in ammonia service. Iron or steel should usuaky be the only metal in ammonia storage tanks, piping, and fittings. Rheometric Scientific markets several devices designed for characterizing viscoelastic fluids. These instmments measure the response of a Hquid to sinusoidal oscillatory motion to determine dynamic viscosity as well as storage and loss moduH. The Rheometric Scientific line includes a fluids spectrometer (RFS-II), a dynamic spectrometer (RDS-7700 series II), and a mechanical spectrometer (RMS-800). The fluids spectrometer is designed for fairly low viscosity materials. The dynamic spectrometer can be used to test soHds, melts, and Hquids at frequencies from 10 to 500 rad/s and as a function of strain ampHtude and temperature. It is a stripped down version of the extremely versatile mechanical spectrometer, which is both a dynamic viscometer and a dynamic mechanical testing device. The RMS-800 can carry out measurements under rotational shear, oscillatory shear, torsional motion, and tension compression, as well as normal stress measurements. Step strain, creep, and creep recovery modes are also available. It is used on a wide range of materials, including adhesives, pastes, mbber, and plastics. [Pg.202]

Tank Shell. Another example of where thickness is set by minimums for fabricabihty but not for strength is in small-diameter tanks. For example, a water storage tank built using a steel of an allowable stress of 20,000 psi (138 mPa), 9 ft (3 m) in diameter by 21-ft (7-m) high, requires a shell thickness to resist hoop stress of only 0.023-in. (0.58-mm) thick. However, if built to API Standard 650, the shell would be fabricated at least 0.1875-in. (4.76-mm) thick. The code requires this thickness so that when fabrication, welding, and tolerances are considered, a tank of acceptable quaUty and appearance meeting the requirements of most services in most locations is provided. [Pg.316]
