The presence of bile alcohols in human urine was first demonstrated in 1981 by Karlaganis et al. [78]. Studying metabolic profiles of bile acids in urine, they found a number of bile alcohols in the steroid glucuronide fraction. The major compound was identified as 27-nor-5 6-cholestane-3a,7a,12a,24,25-pentol [78]. Excretion of this Cjf, bile alcohol as the major bile alcohol in urine from healthy and diseased humans was confirmed by Karlaganis et al. [79] and by Ludwig-Kohn et al. [94]. The latter authors also identified 5)8-cholestane-3a,7a,12a,25,26-pentol in human urine [94]. 

The application of environmentally sensitive chelates have been applied to develop a more straightforward approach to the development of a competitive homogeneous assay. This principle has been applied to some steroid glucuronides (22,23), thyroxine (21) and receptor ligand assays. 

J . rerio, attraction of the male to the ovulated female evidently is mediated by steroid glucuronides. Water soluble ovarian extracts (lipids and free steroids removed) prepared either from ovulated ovaries (van den Hurk and Lambert, 1983) or from recently spent ovaries incubated with testosterone (van den Hurk et al., 1982) attract male j3. rerio, whereas females show no response. Male rerio also are attracted to a subfraction of the aqueous ovarian extract containing steroid glucuronides, and to sjmthetic glucuronides of estradiol and testosterone (van den Hurk and Lambert, 1983). 

Enol—TMS derivatives of steroids have been prepared with piotassium acetate as catalyst and applied with success [66). Steroid glucuronides can be analysed as their per-TMS derivatives [67] but low abundance molecular ions are generally obtained.
