Organic farming is rooted in the concepts of biodynamic farming, first articulated in 1924 by philosopher Rudolph Steiner in a series of lectures, and later taught by biochemist Ehrenfried Pfeiffer and others during the 1930s and 1940s (Steiner 1974, Pfeiffer 1947). [Pg.221]

An anthroposophical lifestyle is one in which participants follow a system of beliefs and practice based on the teachings of Rudolph Steiner, maintaining that by correct training and personal discipline, one can attain experience of the spiritual world. Features of an anthroposophical lifestyle may include a choice not to immunise children, restricted use of antibiotics, increased exposure to childhood infections and dietary patterns which may influence the intestinal microflora [165(111), 166(111)]. A cross-sectional study comparing children in two Rudolph Steiner schools near Stockholm, Sweden, with children in neighbouring schools showed lower prevalence of atopy among children from the Steiner schools [166(111)]. There is further comment on this in Chapter 3. [Pg.61]

To benefit from these lunar influences of the moon, people who practice gardening by the moon draw up an annual calendar and tend their plants accordingly. Biodynamic gardeners and farmers, who follow the teachings of Austrian philosopher Rudolph Steiner, also use lunar calendars, but theirs are more complex, as they believe that plants are affected by wider planetary rhythms, and that crops are linked to one of the four traditional elements— earth, water, air, and fire—depending on whether they are root, leaf, flower, or seed crops. Each crop must be planted when the moon is in the sign of the zodiac associated with that element. [Pg.324]

At about the same time, Rudolph Steiner, the founder of the spiritualistic doctrine of Anthroposophy, gave a series of lectures to a group of German farmers worried by the new developments in agriculture and from this developed the biodynamic movement. Koepf summarised the basic concepts of the movement as ... [Pg.426]
