Steel vanadium

About 80% of the vanadium now produced is used as ferrovanadium or as a steel additive. Vanadium foil is used as a bonding agent in cladding htanium to steel. Vanadium pentoxide is used in ceramics and as a catalyst. [Pg.72]

Vanadium is an excellent alloy metal with iron that produces hard, strong, corrosion-resistant steel that resists most acids and alkali. It is even more resistant to seawater corrosion than is stainless steel. Vanadium is difficult to prepare in a pure form in large amounts. Impure forms seem to work as well as a very pure form of the metal when used as an alloy. When worked as a metal, it must be heated in an inert atmosphere because it will readily oxidize. [Pg.93]

Vanadium is added to steel for high resistance to oxidation and to stabilize carbide. Vanadium foil is used for cladding titanium to steel. Vanadium-gallium alloy is used in making superconductive magnets. An important compound of vanadium is pentoxide which has many commercial uses (See Vanadium Pentoxide). [Pg.962]

FERROVANADIUM. CAS 12604-58-9. An iron-vandium alloy used to add vanadium lo steel. Vanadium is used in engineering steels to the extent of I). 1-0.25% and in high-speed steels lo the extent of 1-2.5% or higher. Melting range 1482-1521 C. Furnished in a variety of lump, crushed, and ground sizes, formed by reduction of the oxide with aluminum or silicon in the presence of iron in an electric furnace. [Pg.612]

Vanadium is the most important element of group Va. It finds extensive use in the manufacture of special steels. Vanadium steel is tough and strong, and is used in automobile crank shafts and for similar purposes. The prineipkl ores of vanadium are vanadinite, Pb5(V04)3CI, and carnoiite, K(U02)V04 H20. The latter mineral is also important as an ore of uranium. [Pg.505]

For an interstitial alloy to form, the solute atoms must have a much smaller bonding atomic radius than the solvent atoms. Typically, the interstitial element is a nonmetal that makes covalent bonds to the neighboring metal atoms. The presence of the extra bonds provided by the interstitial component causes the metal lattice to become harder, stronger, and less ductile. For example, steel, which is much harder and stronger than pure iron, is an alloy of iron that contains up to 3% carbon. Other elements may be added to form alloy steels. Vanadium and chromium may be added to impart strength, for instance, and to increase resistance to fatigue and corrosion. [Pg.492]
