Static mechanical pressurization

To inject the polymer melt into the mold, the melt must be pressurized. This is achieved by the forward thrust of the screw (a) or the piston (b), both of which act as rams. Hence we have static mechanical pressurization, as discussed in Section 6.7, which results in positive displacement flow. [Pg.755]

Fig. 5.16. The relative, shock-induced magnetization change is determined at a given pressure by the ratio of peak current to that at full magnetization change. Various sensitivities with pressure are indicated in agreement with static high pressure data. Offsets at zero magnetization change are typical and may be due to magnetic or mechanical effects (after Edwards [90E01]). Fig. 5.16. The required relief area. A], for a volume V] = 1 cu m obtained from the nomograms. The same reduced explosion pressure, P,.ed, and same static activation pressure, Psiau of the relief device are the same for both volumes Vi and V2, and therefore constant. WTien the mechanical strength of the vessel, is changed, the maximum volume and height will change with the hazard class, St-1, St-2, or St-3. [Pg.517]

In the case of a flowing fluid the mechanical pressure is not necessarily the same as the thermodynamic pressure as is the case in a static fluid. The pressure in a flowing fluid is defined as the average of the normal stress components. In the case of inelastic fluids, the normal stress components are equal and therefore, with the negative sign convention, equal to the pressure. It is for this reason that the pressure can be used in place of the normal stress when writing force balances for inelastic liquids, as was done in Examples 1.7-1.9. [Pg.44]

It can be seen from Fig. 8.5 that pyrite still exhibits the cathodic characteristic when sphalerite is used as the opposite electrode at static state. The corrosion potential of the pyrite electrode decreases at the beginning and is finally stabilized at about 140 mV. The pyrite electrode has not exhibited obvious cathode current. When sphalerite is used as the grinding media as seen from Fig. 8.6, the potential of pyrite electrode decreases with the increase of the mechanical pressure exerted on it and the grinding time. Pyrite exhibits cathodic characteristic, but the degree of cathode polarization is less than that in Fe grinding media. Corrosion potential of the pyrite electrode reaches to the lowest value about 145 mV at pressure of 800 g and 8 min. [Pg.204]

A. Methyl 3.6-dimethyl-3-hydroxy-6-heptenoate (Note 1). An oven-dried, threenecked, 500-mL, round-bottomed flask, is fitted with an efficient mechanical stirrer, a Claisen adapter bearing a reflux condenser with a nitrogen, inlet and rubber septum, and a thermometer. The flask is maintained under a static nitrogen pressure and charged with 5-methyl-5-hexen-2-one (24.20 g, 0.216 mol) (Note 2), trimethyl borate... [Pg.158]

Almost everyone has a concept of pressure from weather reports of tlie pressure of the atmosphere around us. In this context, high pressure is a sign of good weather while very low pressures occur at the eyes of cyclones and hurricanes. In elementary discussions of mechanics, hydrostatics of fluids and the gas laws, most scientists leam to compute pressures in static systems as force per unit area, often treated as a scalar quantity. They also leam that unbalanced pressures cause fluids to flow. Winds are the flow of the atmosphere from regions of high to low... [Pg.1955]

Sonochemistry is strongly affected by a variety of external variables, including acoustic frequency, acoustic intensity, bulk temperature, static pressure, ambient gas, and solvent (47). These are the important parameters which need consideration in the effective appHcation of ultrasound to chemical reactions. The origin of these influences is easily understood in terms of the hot-spot mechanism of sonochemistry. [Pg.262]

Disjoining Pressure. A static pressure difference can be imposed between the interior and exterior of a soap film by several means including, for example, gravity. In such cases the equiHbrium film thickness depends on the imposed pressure difference as weU as on the effective interface potential. When the film thickness does not minimize lV(f), there arises a disjoining pressure II = —dV/(U which drives the system towards mechanical equiHbrium. [Pg.428]
