In oxidized polyolefins typical carbonyl compounds in the region of 1640-1740 cm can be observed. Figure 3.1 shows an example of degraded LDPE containing a masterbatch of corn starch, linear LDPE and styrenebutadiene copolymer compared with commercial LDPE. This shows that LDPE containing the starch-prooxidant mixture is clearly more susceptible to biodegradation compared to pure LDPE. [Pg.34]

The distinctions between these homopolymers arise from the different ways in which the monomer units are hooked together in polyacetal chains. Starch (qv), plant nutrient material, is composed of two polysaccharides a-amylose and amylopectin. cx-Amylose is linear because of exclusive a (1 — 4) linkages, whereas amylopectin is branched because of the presence of a (1 — 6) as well as a (1 — 4) links. The terms linear and branched refer only to primary stmcture. [Pg.94]

Components of a highly short chain branched (scb) waxymaize and a more long chain branched (Icb) amylomaize were separated on the semipreparative Sephacryl S-1000 system. Both samples contained high dp components that eluted in the exclusion volume, but the percentage of these components was quite different 90% for the scb waxymaize starch and approximately 10% for the Icb amylomaize starch (Fig. 16.6).
