Standards bolting

For flanges of nonstandard dimensions or for sizes beyond the scope of the approved standards, design shall be in accordance with the requirements of the ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code, Sec. T11, except that requirements for fabrication, assembly, inspection testing, and the pressure and temperature hmits for materials of the Piping Code are to prevail. Among the topics of the TEMA Standards are nomenclature, fabrication tolerances, inspeclion, guarantees, tubes, shells, baffles and support plates, floating heads, gaskets, tube sheets, channels, nozzles, end flanges and bolting, materi specifications, and fouhng resistances. 

An approximate relationship is eommonly used to determine the torque for assembly, M, for a given pre-load, FfShigley and Misehke, 1996). It is a standard formulation for bolts and fasteners determined from experiment and is related to the frietion found in the eontaeting surfaees of the parts on assembly. 

I xtemal inspection criteria are provided by these standards for foundation and supports, anchor bolts, concrete or steel supports, guy wires, nozzles, sprinklers pipe hangers, . rouiuling coiiiiee(ions, protective coatings, insulation, and external metal surfaces. 

You need to develop documented procedures that define your subcontractor evaluation and selection process and in certain cases this may result in several closely-related procedures for use when certain conditions apply. Do not try to force every purchase through the same selection process. Having purchasing policies that require three quotations for every purchase regardless of past performance of the current subcontractor is placing price before quality. Provide flexibility so that the policies and procedures complexity match the risks anticipated. Going out to tender for a few standard nuts and bolts would seem unwise. Likewise, placing an order for lm of equipment based solely on the results of a third party ISO 9000 certification would also seem unwise. 

Cabinets come in a variety of units to suit individual needs. These are then bolted together to make benches. Any combination of drawers, cupboards, and knee-hole units is possible. Some fume hoods come complete with their own base cabinets. Where desirable, desk-height units can be integrated into the system. All units come with legs which can be acijusted for an uneven floor. Standard installation leaves room behind the counters or along the middle of peninsulas for utilities. After the cabinets are installed, counter tops are put in place and bench-mounted fume hoods added.

The dimensions of typical standard saddle designs are given in Figure 13.26. To take up any thermal expansion of the vessel, such as that in heat exchangers, the anchor bolt holes in one saddle can be slotted. 

Standard designs will normally be used for the bolting chairs. The design shown in Figure 13.30 has been adapted from that given by Scheiman. 

Note that the chutes are fabricated of standard FRP sections with reinforcing rib members. Sections are bolted together. Note also that an integral support column is necessary for safety chutes extending above a second floor. The radius of the chute is shown as 6 -0" at the bottom.
