Standard operating procedures, training, and emphasis on contractor personnel. 

The standard operating procedures demand great attention as they reflect personnel safety issues, safe operating limits and quality considerations. They should be written simply and clearly. The level of detail is determined by the training and experience of the operations staff but should also take into account the hazards inherent in the process. 

Standard operating procedures (SOPs) are step-by-step job instructions which can help workers perform their jobs safely and efficiently. When the end users are involved in their design, SOPs can provide a basis for arriving at a method of work agreed-to by different shifts. In this sense, SOPs can be used to develop training programs and specify measures of competence. Because of the importance of SOPs in the work situation, a systematic framework is needed to enable the design of reliable procedures which are acceptable by the workforce.

In the author s experience, field residue trials can be conducted in Latin America under complete compliance with all ERA guidelines and recommendations. More time does need to be spent in planning and preparation to ensure that the personnel involved in the testing have been trained in GLP and that this training, as well as the compliance of equipment, storage and archival sites, standard operating procedures (SOPs), and quality assurance (QA) audits, are properly documented. 

The training of LSMBS shoppers is generally conducted by telephone and through written instructions. Often, since the network of shoppers is widely dispersed and may or may not be involved with more than one sample collection period, formal SOPs are not devised and provided to the shoppers. Provision of adequate competent medical staff is essential for the safe and ethical conduct of studies in humans. Similarly, research nurses need many organisational and other skills over and above those that they acquired during their basic clinical training. Scientific staff must be competent in the techniques that will provide the essential data. All must be properly briefed about what will be required of them during the course of a study, and must be fully familiar with local standard operating procedures (SOPs) in compliance with good clinical practice (GCP). 

The GLP standards specify that the laboratory must have SOPs for particular activities at a minimum. Most laboratories find that implementation of GLPs will cause a dramatic increase in the number of SOPs used by the facility. They are an effective and easy way to document a procedure and to ensure that the staff is trained in the correct procedure. Standard Operating Procedures are hving documents and require care and maintenance however. 

Standard operating procedure should define cleaning of process equipment and facilities. Operators should be trained in cleaning SOPs.
