Impact velocities from about 2 to 6 kms which can produce shock pressures in the 110 GPa range, are routinely achieved with two-stage, light-gas guns. These systems are typically limited to diameters of from 12 to 25 mm. To achieve these velocities, propellant is used to accelerate a large piston which serves to compress a reservoir of helium or hydrogen gas to high pressure. The gas then accelerates the projectile over an acceleration distance of perhaps 25 m. [Pg.59]

Supernova remnants (SNR) in early stages of expansion display results of advanced (explosive) nucleosynthesis, but in later stages light up the interstellar medium by shock excitation and give information about the ISM in external galaxies complementary to that derived from H n regions. [Pg.87]

The actor Anthony Andrews had no idea that drinking too much water could be harmful. Under the hot stage lights it is easy to become thirsty and even dehydrated,... [Pg.125]

CO2 are fixed into sugar (glucose) and mediated by the enzyme rubisco (ribulose-l-5-biphosphate carboxylase). It occurs in the stroma of chloroplasts. The Calvin cycle is also known as the dark reaction, as opposed to the first-stage light reactions. [Pg.39]

Dilution steam Injection. First stage (light feed) or second stage (heavy feed). By using this technique, coke formation from heavy oil in convection section coils can be minimized. [Pg.121]

Three distinct volume regions are defined as shown in Fig. 17 for two adjacent extraction stages of a typical CCD apparatus containing a total of n extraction stages. Light phase is transferred from the left adjacent cavity (n -1) to the right cavity (n) by slicing the phase system at the junction of the two... [Pg.179]

In the early twentieth century, patents were taken out on certain bis-(acylamino)-stilbene disulfonic acids for use as fluorescers in stage lighting effects produced by UV light. Their optical whitening properties were not recognized at that time, and it was some time later that a patent was filed for the production, as UV absorbers, of optical whiteners from the series of 4,4 -bis-(triazinylamino)-stilbene-2,2 -disulfonic acids. " ... [Pg.550]

Dimmers are not only used in homes. Electric lighting technicians (ELTs) in the theater industry use dimmers for more deliberate control over stage lights. The ability to subtly influence lighting helps create different moods to complement the emotions of the actors and actresses. [Pg.351]
