Spray drying initial droplet size

In reactive spray drying, there is always the competition between reaction and evaporation. In order to determine which process occurs at which point of time, the droplet surface upon shell formation. Ajijeu was compared to the initial droplet surface Aq. It was found that at DN = 0 %, (pure AA), the shell formation started at a droplet size of 18 % of the initial droplet surface. In contrast, at DN = 100 % (pure NaA) the droplet had the size of 90% of the initial droplet size at shell formation. Due to the precipitation of NaA, an increasing DN led to an almost linear enhancement of droplet size at the time of shell formation. [Pg.153]

Wu and Liu (2002) analyzed the mechanism of the pulse combustion spray drying of salt solution in an oscillating flow field produced by a Helmholtz-type pulse combustor with an external flapper valve. The solution was atomized directly by the pulsating flow in the combustor tailpipe, which reduced the average droplet diameter by about 50% in relation to conventional nozzle atomization. An optical analyzer was applied to measure the droplet size distribution in the spray in order to determine the initial conditions for the CFD model of the process. An aerosol is a colloidal dispersion of liquid droplets in a vapor. Aerosols can be used to make oxide powders in a variety of ways. For example, an aqueous sol can be sprayed into alcohol, where the aerosol droplets gel to produce spheres [110]. Subsequent firing produces perfect dense oxide spheres whose size depends on the concentration of the initial sol. Schwartz et al. [4] prepared powders of lead lanthanum zirconate titanate by spraying a salt solution into ammonium hydroxide and then spray-dried the resulting powder to produce uniform spheres 0.5-2/rm in diameter. In such complex compositions, aerosols are advantageous, because each droplet is a small reaction vessel, and heterogeneity cannot occur on a scale larger than the size of the droplet. [Pg.150]

Three microscopic pictures of the DE emulsion structure treated with the EXMIX nozzle are inserted in Fig. 23.13 (bottom). To keep the microstructure of such DE unchanged, an INMIX nozzle is obviously the better choice for a GLR up to ca. 0.5.
