In order to measure an accurate dose a standard measuring spoon is provided with any liquid medication. The standard spoon size is 5 mL (see Figure 9.9). [Pg.237]

Extra fluid should be ingested when taking dextromethorphan for therapeutic purposes, which helps relieve congestion associated with colds or influenza. Dextromethorphan should also be taken with food if it upsets the patient s stomach. The liquid form of dextromethorphan should be measured carefully with a special spoon or cup and not with a standard tablespoon to accurately measure the correct amount pharmacists can often provide these accurate measuring devices. Dextromethorphan should be used only as directed by a physician. If the instmctions are unclear, the patient can usually receive reliable information about dextromethorphan from a pharmacist or nurse. [Pg.147]

Home/domestic measures. A standard 5 ml spoon and a graduated oral syringe are available. Otherwise the following approximations will serve 1 tablespoonful = 14 ml (or mL)... [Pg.34]

Powders for oral use can either be bulk powders or unit dose powders. Bulk powders are usually restricted to less potent medicines intended for symptomatic relief of minor ailments, for example, indigestion. The dose taken is usually measured with a 5-mL spoon, stirred into a quantity of water and then swallowed. This method of measurement can create considerable problems with regard to expected standards of precision dosage. These powders are formulated on the basis of dose weights, whereas the dose is actually measured by volume. A heaped 5-mL spoonful is considered to be equivalent to 5 g of powder. The dose can vary quite considerably, depending on... [Pg.242]

The compactness of undisturbed soil below the drill hole can be measured in situ by means of a probing test (CPT see B.2.3 testing ) or a standard penetration test (SPT). After successfully performing an SPT-test, the split spoon contains a (disturbed) soil sample, which can be used for the subsequent lab test programme. [Pg.542]

The SPT is the most widely used of all in situ tests and is carried out in boreholes formed by cable tool percussion methods or by washboring. It involves the hammering of a standard split spoon into the ground and measuring the number of blows required to do this, using a standard hammer weight and drop height. [Pg.560]
