The most abundant natural steroid is cholesterol. It can be obtained in large quantides from wool fat (15%) or from brain or spinal chord tissues of fat stock (2-4%) by extraction with chlorinated hydrocarbons. Its saturated side-chain can be removed by chromium trioxide oxidation, but the yield of such reactions could never be raised above 8% (see page 118f.).

Glutamatergic neurons are widely distributed throughout the entire brain. Most glutamatergic neurons are so-called projection neurons their axon projects into distant brain regions. The work-up for patients undergoing MRC is similar to that proposed for CTC. Nevertheless, some differences must be taken into account. As for any other MRI examination, patients should be screened for contraindications to the exam, such as severe claustrophobia, presence of cardiac pacemakers or metallic implants in critical regions (e.g. brain and spinal chord). The presence of hip prostheses, which normally is not regarded as a contraindication to MRI, may prevent a complete analysis of the rectum and sigmoid colon. Therefore, these patients should be considered for alternative tests such as CTC. 

A careful microscopic examination of the spinal chord and brain demonstrates patches of demyeliniza-tion. Degeneration of the axis cylinders of the peripheral nerves, the dorsal, and the autonomic system have been described. Neuronal degeneration has also been observed in the dorsal nuclei of the vagus nerve and the celiac plexus, the cerebellum, the dorsal root ganglia, and the anterior horn cells of the spinal chord.
