Sphingosines dihydro

A common feature of lipid chemistry is that there is not a single class of lipids which represent one distinct chemical moiety. Rather each class is characterized by its constituents, their molar ratios and their modes of linkages. The many different acyl-components (saturated and unsaturated fatty acids) e. g. in glycero-phospholipids or the different fatty acids and different sphingosines (dihydro-, 18 and 20 sphingosines) of sphingohpids cause each well defined class to become an array of many different molecules with possibly different physico-chemical properties. [Pg.12]

Cerebrosides differ also in the composition of the constituent fatty acids. Alpha-hydroxy fatty acids with chain lengths ranging between 18 and 25 carbon atoms have been obtained from cerebroside hydrolysates. The saturated fatty acids most frequently found are stearic and lignoceric acids. The unsaturated fatty acids found mainly in cerebroside hydrolysates are 24 carbons long. Sphingosine is present in 95% of the cerebrosides, but cerebrosides containing dihydro-sphingosine have also been reported. [Pg.192]

Five lipids (ceramide IV, sphingosine, sphingosine phosphate, and dihydro- and phytosphingosine) were isolated from cell cultures and analyzed on a silica column (ELSD, drift tube T = 70°, N2 nebulizer gas at 1.6 bar) using a 90/01/1/1 chloroform/ethanol (200 proof)/triethylamine/formic acid mobile phase [782]. Good resolution and peak shapes were achieved and elution was complete in 16 min. A linear response from 1.7 to 17 ig injected was generated and a detection limit of 100 ng injected were reported. [Pg.280]
