The expected areas of future expansion of EFLC are in the separation of highly polar solutes. Mixtures of 61.7/27.7/10.6 and 55.7/25/1/19.2 mol ratio methanol/H20/C02 were predicted to have dielectric constants of 38 and 34 [28], respectively. Ion-exchange EFLC should be viable in these and other higher polar EFL mixtures, such as acetontrile/H20/C02 and THF/H2O/CO2 mixtures. Ultra high-speed gradient separations may be possible in EFLC as a result of the fast desorption rate constants for solutes under EFLC conditions. [Pg.447]

The surface viscosity if is defined as follows. Two parallel line elements are moved parallel to each other. Between them (if we consider Newtonian behaviour) a constant speed gradient dv/dy will exist. The force required to maintain the movement is... [Pg.292]

As a consequence of the very rough surface of a coniferous canopy (which in no way approaches a plane structure) thermal fluxes from these surfaces are relatively small ie. forest canopy surfaces are relatively cooler than the surfaces of farm crops (18). The spire like structure of the crown result in daytime temperature gradients immediately above the canopy surface which are small and wind speed gradients which are relatively large. It should he anticipated that buoyant (free convective) eddies generated by vertical temperature gradients will be relatively unimportant and that wind speed gradients will provide the major source of eddy currents. [Pg.215]

Under great volume consumption rates of melts in the same experiments, an interesting effect was observed the extrudate became narrowed at the channel slit size 1.9 x 9.9 mm. The extrudate was 2 mm thick but only 5.5 + 0.5 mm wide. Reduction of the extrudate cross-section means transfer to a multilayer flow. It can be assumed that this phenomenon is caused by the existence of temperature cross-gradients along the channel section. This leads to a non-linear distribution of speed gradients and tensions over the channel section and along the flow axis, that in some places conditions for the melts-cohesion disintegration exist (see Sect. 4.4). [Pg.21]

In fluid mechanics, the flow of gas along a wall is modeled by the formation of boundary layers with gradients of temperature, reactant species concentration, and gas flow speed. These various boundary layers are generally stacked. The boundary layer related to the gas flow speed gradient models the transition from the null speed at the surface of the substrate to the full speed of gas. It is noted 6 and expressed in terms of parameters that reflect the forces of inertia and viscosity by ... [Pg.165]

Obviously the column is operated far from its van Deemter minimum for both high- and super-speed HPLC and so cannot perform at its maximum performance. Although super-speed HPLC is more suitable for isocratic separation, super-speed gradients are also feasible. [Pg.352]

The characteristic feature of flow laminations is the directional orientation of the anisometric particles in the shearing speed gradient of the auger channel, the pressure head and the die. Figure 3 pictures the fracture surfaces of extruded clay-body columns after drying showing various flow laminations caused by different clay mineral content. [Pg.208]

Thickness control is very important because thickness of the produced fdm can be as small as 0.04 mm. Most or all the rolls are mounted on moveable bearings and nip is adjusted by moveable bearings. In modem calenders, movement of rolls is computer controlled with a high precision. Rolls also have individual drives and thus the required speed gradient may be selected. [Pg.475]

If the sound speed is a minimum at a certain depth below the surface, then this depth is called the axis of the underwater sound channel (also called the sound fixing and ranging (SOFAR) channel.) The sound velocity increases both above and below this axis. When the sound wave travels through a medium with a sound speed gradient, the direction of travel of the sound wave is bent toward the area of lower sound speed. [Pg.1880]

Better controlled data > show a better agreement for elongation at constant speed gradients, s = 0.2 s, and T = 115 to 130 °C (corresponding to t 10 to 1000 s) we recall that the molecular weight 1.4-10 corresponds to the appearance of a plateau behaviour in the viscoelastic data. [Pg.64]

We can itemize this momentum transfer between the two layers, which are separated by 2X. using the formal definition of the speeds due to the vertical gradient as = dv/dz) z + X) at the upper sht and Vj = dv/dz) z — -) at the lower sht. By assuming 1 cm x 1 cm layers, we can write the momentum transfer though a (1 cm x 1 cm) window between the layers. For the moment, ignore the fact that we do not know the speed gradient (dv/dz) and write out the two momenta in the upper and lower layers ... [Pg.49]
