Specialized Surveys

In order to maintain Class and to comply with international legislation a ship must undergo surveys at prescribed intervals. Ships such as tankers and bulk carriers must comply with International Maritime Organisation resolutions which require a Class Enhanced Survey Programme. This programme includes Special Surveys at five yearly intervals with close-up visual inspection and thickness measurements to be made at specified locations, the number of which increases with the age of the ship. 

Special surveys have been made in small areas where geological conditions indicated high indoor radon concentrations. These suggest that there is a small number of dwellings in the UK in which the average radon concentration may exceed 1250 Bq m 3, corresponding to an annual dose of 25 mSv. 

The Austrian industrial landscape 2003 is characterised by small and medium sized enterprises (SME). A special survey of the Leistungs- und Strukturstatistik (performance and structural statistics) 2003 showed that 91.3% of the enterprises employed less than 250 people. 

As mentioned earlier, the rapid development of organotransition metal chemistry has been paralleled by and intimately connected with the development of metal carbonyl chemistry. The discoveries of new metal carbonyls and the advances in understanding of the structures and bonding of these substances have been so profuse that they would require a special survey.

In contrast to this more integrated approach, some companies have elected to develop and administer a special survey focused solely on D I issues. Special surveys may be undertaken to meet specific problems, for example, if high levels of airborne contamination or loose surface contamination are suspected, or when routine monitoring reveals unusual or abnormal conditions such as the occurrence of an area of elevated activity (also called a hot spot). 

Inspectors visits follow varied patterns. There are routine inspections carried out at broadly fixed intervals, visits to investigate accidents, incidents and complaints, special surveys, and visits at the request of management or the unions. Routine inspections could be by arrangement or by surprise visit. In the past, when they were basically Factory Inspectors, they on principle always made surprise visits, but nowadays the much larger field of work covered means that they carry out more arranged visits, though they nevertheless retain the authority to make unannounced visits.
