A notable example of controlled water reuse was utilization of secondary sewage effluent from the Back River Wastewater Treatment Plant in Baltimore by the Sparrows Point Works of Bethlehem Steel (6). The Sparrows Point plant was suppHed primarily by weUs located near the brackish waters of Baltimore harbor. Increased draft on the weUs had led to saltwater intmsion. Water with chloride concentration as high as 10 mg/L is unsuitable for many steelmaking operations. Rollers, for example, are pitted by such waters. However, treated effluent from the Back River Plant can be used for some operations, such as coke quenching, and >4 x 10 m /d (10 gal/d) are piped 13 km to Sparrows Point. This arrangement has proved economical to both parties for >40 yr. [Pg.291]

There have been several analyses of turbulent heat transfer in annuh for example, Deissler and Taylor (NACA Tech. Note 3451, 1955), Kays and Leung [Int. J. Heat Ma.ss Transfer, 6, 537 (1963)], Lee [Int. J. Heat Transfer, 11, 509 (1968)], Sparrow, HaUman and Siegel [Appl. Sci. Res., 7A, 37 (1958)], and Johnson and Sparrow [Am. Soc. Mech. Eng. J. Condensation of pure vapors under laminar conditions in the presence of noncondensable gases, interfacial resistance, superheating, variable properties, and diffusion has been analyzed by Minkowycz and Sparrow [Int. ]. Heat Ma.s.s Tran.sfer, 9, 1125 (1966)]. [Pg.568]

Yu and Sparrow (]. Basic Eng., 70, 405-410 [1970]) give a theoretically derived chart for slot seals with or without a sheet located in or passing through the seal, giving mass flow rate as a function of the ratio of seal plate thickness to gap opening. [Pg.641]

Continuous Flat Surface Boundaiy layers on continuous surfaces drawn through a stagnant fluid are shown in Fig. 6-48. Figure 6-48 7 shows the continuous flat surface (Saldadis, AIChE J., 7, 26—28, 221-225, 467-472 [1961]). The critical Reynolds number for transition to turbulent flow may be greater than the 500,000 value for the finite flat-plate case discussed previously (Tsou, Sparrow, and Kurtz, J. FluidMech., 26,145—161 [1966]). For a laminar boundary layer, the thickness is given by... [Pg.666]

In predicting the effects of a pollutant on population growth rate, the effects of the chemical on the values of t, I, and n are of central interest. Chemical residue data and biomarker assays that provide measures of toxic effects are relevant here because they can, in concept, be used to relate the effects of a chemical upon the individual organism to a population parameter such as survivorship or fecundity (Figures 4.5 and 4.6). Examples of this are discussed in the second part of the text, including the reduction of survivorship of sparrow hawks caused by dieldrin (Chapter 5), the... [Pg.92]
