Space exploration costs

Automobiles cost more than 100 times the price of the battery, but the battery permits easy, reliable starting, allowing it to be a convenient mode of transportation for normal lifestyles. Indeed, batteries provide the only efficient small-scale devices for the storage of instantly available electrical energy. Dependent on batteries are all automobiles all telephone circuits most modem watches, calculators, and standby power sources most modem weapons systems for propulsion (torpedoes, for example), communication, and guidance systems space exploration (which also uses fuel cells) and implanted heart pacers. 

Our national character has always included the desire to do better, to build a better light bulb". It seems as though this country as a whole has lost some of this enthusiasm for achievement. Today some people question whether advances in technology are worth other social costs, such as a clean environment. They question the importance of a new and improved brand of laundry detergent. They question the efficacy of space exploration in lieu of cancer research. These are apprehensions which ought to be discussed. They are valid concerns. The answer, however, lies in the ability of the private sector, led by consumer demand and preferences, to determine the priorities. 

This machine has shown how input costs can be varied in EMUCS to allow for a design space exploration and to allow particular technologies to be targeted in the data path allocation phase. 

Methods employing low sample volumes (< pL) have been explored, which are aimed at the high-throughput and cost-effective exploration of the design space for chromatographic separations, especially related to bioanalytical techniques focused on large biomolecules analyses (proteins and peptides). 

The space mission Cassini, destined to explore the neighborhood of Saturn, will accumulate a large mass of scientihc data. This mission was extremely costly. With the same money, hundreds of hospitals and schools in Africa could have been built. Where would you have invested that amount of money ...
