A demonstration of a MCFC power plant at an automobile manufacturing plant site in Tuscaloosa, Alabama is planned for the first quarter of 2001. Only a few surveys have been done to measure toxaphene residues in agricultural soils. Carey et al. [27,28] surveyed cropland in the United States in 1971, collecting 1473 soil samples in 37 states that covered the eastern, southern and mid-western portion of the country and four western states California, Oregon, Washington and Idaho. Results have been summarized by Li et al. [26]. Only 33 of the sites reported toxaphene use and 92 soil samples were positive. The maximum and arithmetic mean of positive samples were 36 330 and 281 ngg-1 dry weight, respectively. Soil surveys have recently been done at farms in Alabama in 1996 and 1999-2000 [29-31], Louisiana and Texas in 1999 [29,30] and Georgia and South Carolina in 1999 [32]. Total toxaphene concentrations in the latter studies ranged from < 3-6500 ngg-1 (Table 2), and residues appeared to be log-normally distributed [29]. 

Peaks 5 and 7 were depleted in both the soil and overlying air. Similar degradation profiles were seen in southern ambient air samples from Alabama [34], Texas and Arkansas [38], and in Great Lakes air (Sect. 3.1.3). Their main components, B8-531, B8-806 and B8-809, are predicted to be relatively labile on the basis of molecular structures [39,40].

Before 1991, only four African American students had been awarded Ph.D. degrees in chemistry at LSUBR. Richard Evans was the first African American Ph.D. (1971) in the history of the LSUBR chemistry department. He is now retired from Alabama A M University where he was the chairman of the chemistry department for a number of years. Mildred Smalley (1972) is now vice chancellor for research and strategic initiatives at Southern University. Don Prier and Aris Gallon both joined the local Dow Chemical facility. The excellence of African American Ph.D.s had been proven USU simply needed to actually recruit these students for the graduate program.

The SRC s used in this study were obtained from the SRC process demonstration unit operated by Southern Services Inc. in Wilsonville, Alabama. Three SRC s were studied and these products were derived from the following coals Illinois No. 6 Burning Star, Illinois No. 6 Monterey, and Wyodak (Amax). The as-received SRC s were wet owing to a water quench and therefore each SRC was dried carefully before sampling and analysis. The vacuum resid was prepared by laboratory vacuum distillation of an atmospheric resid obtained from a commercial refinery source. The identification and source of the coal liquid samples used in this study along with other pertinent information are presented in Table I.
