As Britain is relatively poor in mineral deposits, this type of mining is less important here than in other countries of the world. The gold mines in South Africa, metal mines in the U.S.A., Canada and Sweden all use considerable amounts of explosive. In such mines the methods of working are often appreciably different from those described above and adapted to very large-scale production. [Pg.146]

Gold, Aurum in Latin, is the only metal except copper that is markedly colored. It is abundant in low concentrations almost all over the earth s crust, in seawater, above all in metallic form and also as goldtellurid. Gold is found as grains in the bottom of rivers in California, Australia, Alaska, and Russia, Chemical Properties while in South Africa gold ore is won from mines with auriferous leaders. Gold is also won as a by-product from the production of copper, nickel, and lead. The world s yearly production of gold is looo tons, of which 150 tons are used in the electronics industry. [Pg.544]

Platinum is the 75th most abundant element and, unlike many elements, is found in its pure elemental form in nature, as are deposits of silver and gold. Platinum is widely distributed over the Earth and is mined mainly in the Ural Mountains in Russia and in South Africa, Alaska, the western United States, Columbia in South America, and Ontario in Canada. When found in the mineral sperryhte (PtAs ), it is dissolved with aqua regia to form a precipitate called sponge that is then converted into platinum metal. It is also recovered as a by-product of nickel mining, mainly in Ontario, Canada. [Pg.163]

At Sasol the bulk of the CH, is either sold as fuel gas or is reformed to synthesis gas (se5 Figure 1). A portion is, however, sold as raw material for the production of NaCN and Ca(CN)2 which are used to extract gold from the milled ore. (Gold mining is a major industry in South Africa). It crystallizes m the monoclinic system hardness. 2.5 sp gr, 2.55. Its name is derived from [he Greek words meaning gold and fibrous. Most of the common asbestos of commerce is chrysolile. With the industrial revolution in the 19th century and the advent of high-speed machinery, dust exposure increased dramatically, as did dust-caused diseases. In the latter part of the 19th century, interest focused on dust exposure of miners, especially in the gold mines of South Africa and the tin mines of Cornwall. As a result of these studies and others, it was found that high exposure concentrations gave rise to more cases of lung disease. [Pg.11]

As of 2008, the leading producers of the metal included China, South Africa, the United States, Australia, Peru, and Russia. According to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), the price of gold rose 29 percent between 2007 and 2008. In the United States, gold is mined primarily in western states, including Nevada, California, and Alaska. [Pg.229]

The Fairview Mine of Gencor in South Africa has operated a biooxidation plant since 1986. This accounts for about 40% of the pyrite/ arsenopyrite concentrate produced in the mine, taking about 12 tons per day. Gold recovery is greater than 95% after 4 days residence time. [Pg.130]
