Sonar

For underwater dumps, sonar may be a reliable, inexpensive method. Modem units priced under 1000 can show bottom configurations, penetrate mud, record on a graph, show a three-dimensional picture, and record position via attachment to a GPS unit. Metal detectors having these capabilities may exceed 30,000. [Pg.98]

Barium carbonate also reacts with titania to form barium titanate [12047-27-7] BaTiO, a ferroelectric material with a very high dielectric constant (see Ferroelectrics). Barium titanate is best manufactured as a single-phase composition by a soHd-state sintering technique. The asymmetrical perovskite stmcture of the titanate develops a potential difference when compressed in specific crystallographic directions, and vice versa. This material is most widely used for its strong piezoelectric characteristics in transducers for ultrasonic technical appHcations such as the emulsification of Hquids, mixing of powders and paints, and homogenization of milk, or in sonar devices (see Piezoelectrics Ultrasonics). [Pg.480]

Disruption of thyroid functions in vertebrates has been suggested to constitute a potential threat to many vital functions. For example, there is a possibility that disruption to the thyroid hormone levels during embryogenesis could result in disturbed behaviour patterns in the adult form, possibly interfering with migration in certain species and sonar functions in cetaceans. In anurans, thyroid hormones are essential for initiating metamorphosis. ... [Pg.70]

There are many nonintrusive experimental tools available that can help scientists to develop a good picture of fluid dynamics and transport in chemical reactors. Laser Doppler velocimetry (LDV), particle image velocimetry (PIV) and sonar Doppler for velocity measurement, planar laser induced fluorescence (PLIF) for mixing studies, and high-speed cameras and tomography are very useful for multiphase studies. These experimental methods combined with computational fluid dynamics (CFDs) provide very good tools to understand what is happening in chemical reactors. [Pg.331]

Medical Ultrasound Many of us have first seen our unborn children or grandchildren thanks to medical ultrasound technology. This application is somewhat related to sonar in that both use pulse echo methods to send and receive signals. However, in this short-range application, transducer arraj can be designed to form images. [Pg.353]

Silvery metal, that can be cut with a knife. Terbium alloys and additives are widely used in optoelectronics to burn CDs as well as in laser printers. The pronounced magnetostriction (Joule effect) makes "terfenol-D" (terbium-dysprosium-iron) indispensable in sonar technology. The physics of the element appears to be more interesting than its chemistry, in which it is rarely used in catalysis. [Pg.145]

The threat described in the first part of this chapter spurred increased investment in research and development technologies to prevent, detect, and respond to terrorist attacks. One specific area of research, sensors, particularly for chemical and biological agents and radioactive materials, in addition to radar and sonar, is the subject of this book. After describing the threat, this chapter goes on to discuss the use of sensors, fielded sensor capabilities, and existing gaps in sensor capabilities. [Pg.24]
