Some recent applications

In this section, some recent studies of enzyme-catalysed reaction mechanisms will be discussed, to illustrate the types of approaches that have been used, the mechanistic questions which have been investigated along with the insight which has resulted from the calculations, and some practical aspects of the simulations. These applications represent only a selected small number of the many studies of enzymes by QM/MM techniques which have been carried out by many groups in recent years (see section 2.1 above). In some cases, these are applications in which the author has been directly involved. Space permits only a limited discussion here, and the interested reader is urged to refer to the publications cited here and above for more details. [Pg.631]

It is not possible to present all special detectors used in gas phase chromatography, but instead we will mention some recent applications. [Pg.76]

Our discussion in this chapter will focus on the use of the electrostatic potential as a means to understanding and predicting chemical interactions. First, we will examine some of its properties and important features. Next, we will discuss methodology. Finally we will review some recent applications of the electrostatic potential in areas such as hydrogen bonding, molecular recognition, and understanding and prediction of a variety of physio-chemical properties related to molecular interactions. Our intent has not been to provide a complete survey of the ways in which the potential has been used, many of which are described elsewhere (Politzer and Daiker 1981 Politzer, Laurence, and Jayasuriya 1985 Politzer and Murray 1990 Politzer and Murray 1991 Politzer and Truhlar 1981 Scrocco and Tomasi 1973), but rather to focus on some diverse examples. [Pg.50]

Some recent applications have benefited from advances in computing and computational techniques. Steady-state simulation is being used off-line for process analysis, design, and retrofit process simulators can model flow sheets with up to about a million equations by employing nested procedures. Other applications have resulted in great economic benefits these include on-line real-time optimization models for data reconciliation and parameter estimation followed by optimal adjustment of operating conditions. Models of up to 500,000 variables have been used on a refinery-wide basis. [Pg.86]

In this section, we present some recent applications of DFT to the study of enzymatic reactions of pharmaceutical interest. One of the major aims of these studies was to identify TS features that, because the biological targets investigated are involved in the pathogenesis of diseases, could be exploited when designing inhibitors of these enzymes. [Pg.58]

The ability to biosynthetically incorporate noncoded amino acids into proteins site-specifically has facilitated studies not previously possible. These include studies of protein stability, the initiation of protein translation, electron transfer, protein-protein and protein-membrane interactions, reversal of enzyme substrate specificity, and structure-function relationships, among others. A growing number of research labs have begun to report applications of this technique. A brief look at some recent applications of the suppression mutagenesis technique follows. [Pg.93]

Application of the coupling reactions described in the previous section has given many organometallic complexes of ligands containing diyne fragments, which may not be directly coordinated to a metal center. The following surveys this area briefly and describes some recent applications of these systems in the construction of novel molecular architectures. [Pg.226]

Enantiomerically pure trans-2-phenylcyclohexanol, first used by Whitesell as a chiral auxiliary has become a popular reagent in a number of asymmetric transformations. Some recent applications include asymmetric azo-ene reactions, [4 + 2]-cycloaddition reactions, ketene-olefin [2 + 2]-reactions, enolate-imine cyclocondensations, Pauson-Khand reactions," palladium annulations and Reformatsky reactions. Despite its potential, use of this chiral auxiliary on a preparative scale is currently limited by its prohibitive cost. [Pg.197]

The theoretical approaches developed in the book are quite general, enabling treatment of a wide variety of flow situations and process chemistries. The intent of this section, which briefly discusses some recent applications, is to give concrete illustrations of classes of problems that the book considers. [Pg.6]

In addition, the examples described in Section III are all chosen to represent real cases for which calculations have been completed, or are in progress. Thus, they provide a guide to some recent applications of each of the methods discussed, and the reader himself can evaluate the state of the art in applications of each method. [Pg.59]

Among the many variants that add two heteroatoms, those that add phenylsulfonyl groups are particularly useful because they proceed in high yield under mild conditions and provide functionality for subsequent synthetic transformations. The examples contained in Scheme 88 illustrate some recent applications.230-232 In contrast to most radical additions to alkynes, the additions of ArS X are often highly stereoselective. [Pg.771]

Section II will discuss the basic phenomena of inelastic tunneling from the viewpoint of the experimentalist. Section III will treat peak shapes, shifts, and widths. Section IV will deal with intensities and selection rules in IETS. Finally, Section V includes some recent applications of IETS to the fields of chemisorption and catalysis, and to the at first glance unrelated field of surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy. [Pg.217]
