Somatostatin Subject

The mechanism of action of GLP-l(7-37) and GLP-1 (7-36)-NH2 has been the subject of in vitro study. Both peptides increase c-AMP levels in insulin-producing cell lines in a dose-dependent manner [128, 141, 142] and functional receptors have been identified on insulin- and somatostatin-producing cell lines [142-144]. [Pg.12]

Effects on the Pituitary. Somatostatin inhibits GH and thyrotropin releasing hormone (TRH)-induced thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) release from the pituitary. No effects on other pituitary hormones were observed in normal subjects. The inhibition of GH release by somatostatin suggests a use in the treatment of acromegaly. The value of GH release inhibition as long-term therpay cannot be predicted. [Pg.211]

Hypothalamic factors. A growth hormone-release inhibitor (somatostatin) has been Isolated from hypothalamic extracts of sheep and its primary structure determined . This tetradecapeptlde can suppress exercise-induced plasma growth hormone rise in normal and diabetic subjects . However, the therapeutic potential of somatostatin in treating diabetic... [Pg.185]
