In a newer modification, two types of capillary leaks are used glass or silica capillaries with round sections, diameter 1-10-10 cm, length 1-10 cm, or copper capillaries with slit sections. The slit dimensions are lO -lO ram, the slit length is about 1 mm. With the equipment described, direct analysis of mixtures containing components that show high adsorption such as carboxylic acids was possible. 

Horning and co-workers used the so-called atmospheric pressure ionization (API). The ions are formed at atmospheric pressure outside the mass spectrometer. After dV detection, the eluate from a chromatographic column (flow-rate of liquid 0.5 ml/min) is mixed with hot carrier gas (nitrogen) to aid evaporation at 300 C (Fig. 7). The entire effluent stream is vaporized and directed through the external ionization source of the API mass spectrometer. 

Either a corona discharge or the radiation of radioactive Ni is used to produce the ions. The ions reach the low-pressure region of a quadrupole mass analyzer through a small aperture [25 utn). 

The response of this detection system has been compared with that of UV detection.
