In Table III are reported elemental analyses of the original sample (toluene-soluble and toluene-insoluble fractions), of the bases obtained from them, and of the unprecipitated remainder. The preasphaltenes, though defined as tetrahydrofuran-soluble, toluene-insoluble materials, are sufficiently soluble in toluene (approximately 1 g/100 mL) to be used in these precipitation experiments. The elemental analysis data suggest that no significant fractionation has taken place in this dissolution step.

Replacement of hydrogen by alkali-metal disrupts the hydrogen bonding necessary for the concerted mechanism, but the relatively high activity of -SOali was attributed to failure to remove all the water of hydration under the conditions used for drying the catalyst. Hence -SOali could act as a proton-donor acceptor of sufficient strength to act in the concerted mechanism, but was unable to catalyse the carbonium ion mechanism. The soluble toluene-p-sulphonic acid was less active at high concentration because it could not act in a concerted mechanism.

However, this was considered to be only a partial solution since the mass ranges of the asphaltene and preasphaltene of a coal tar [2] were practically identical, despite the evidence that their separation into fractions by solvent solubility (toluene soluble or insoluble) would produce fractions with very different upper mass limits, but with considerable overlap of mass ranges. Accordingly, laser desorption (LD) ionization methods were investigated. 

This section summarizes the data of Karaca et al. [65]. The pitch was fractionated by solvent solubility into heptane solubles, toluene solubles, and toluene insolubles in the weight ratio 14.4%, 44.4%, and 41.2%, respectively.
