Solids Packaging

Industrial packaging is concerned primarily with the safe and economical transportation of goods to their destinations, and with their protection during handling and warehousing. 

Common-carrier regulations, wheflier shipment is over the road or by railway, ship, or air. DOT regulations contain specific requirements for shipping packages. 

Durability of container, adequacy of interior packaging, and protection given to contents by packaging (cushioning, clearances, support, positioning). The most nearly noncombustible suitable containers should be used. 

Specific protective qualities such as resistance to moisture, water, puncturing, scuffing, or abrasion protection against shock, vibration, insect infestation, odor, grease, acid, light, ambient changes, mold, tarnish, pilferage, and other hazards. 

Strength of component materials and unit as a whole, involving parameters such as bvurst strength, flat crush resistance, compressive strength, and puncture resistance.

LAURYL PYRIDININUM CHLORIDE, technical grade, is a mottled, tan waxy solid packaged as a solidified melt in fiber drums. It is soluble in water, alcohol, glycols, acetone, and other organic solvents. 

Stick/SoUd Retail Margarine. Two basic types of stick or solid packaging machinery are used in the United States (62). The first of these forms is a molded print that forces product into a measuring and molding chamber. The molded print is removed from the chamber and then wrapped and cartoned. On the second type of machine, the product from the resting tube is filled directly into a cell that is prelined with a preformed wrapper bag. The wrapping is then folded and ejected from the cell.

Solids present in oil and synthetic muds must be kept wet with the nonaqueous phase to prevent coagulation and settling and mud instabiUty. Oil-wetting agents are normally incorporated in the basic mud package. These materials are typically amines or quaternary ammonium salts having hydrocarbon chains of 10 or more carbon atoms. They also render clays or lignites oil-wet for use in viscosity and filtration control (128).

Shelf Devices Equipment having heated and/or cooled shelves is available but is httle used for divided-sohds heat processing. Most extensive use of stationaiy shelves is freezing of packaged solids for food industries and for freeze drying by sublimation (see Sec. 22).

The weighing and proportioning of liquids and solids has also benefited from this technical revolution. Sensing devices and special-purpose computers give a level of precision and speed not possible in the era of elec tromechanical devices. The net result is that packaging and material handling systems now have the sophistication of chemical processes.
