Solid-liquid mixing processes can be simulated with good precision when sound CFD methods are used. The application of a combination of the virtual finite element method and the network-of-zone approach was used in this work to analyze the complex flow and suspension mechanisms in a coaxial mixer. We are all familiar with use of microwave radiation in cooking food where it increases the speed of reaction. Recently this method has been used to synthesize solid state materials such as mixed oxides. The first solid state reaction experiments were performed in modified domestic ovens, and these are still used, but more specialised (and expensive ) ovens have also been developed to give more control over the conditions. All the glasses, when not otherwise specified, were sieved at 256 mesh. Glass samples were mixed with NaOH solutions of different concentration in perfectly closed Teflon containers.
