Solar Control Laminates

Beyond the well known safety glass commonly used in automotive windshields, glass laminates are incorporated as windows into trains, airplanes, ships, and nearly every other mode of transportation. 

Solar control compositions are composed of an infrared absorbing phthalocyanine, naphthalocyanine, and an ionomer (17).

Laminated glass is used for solar control, particularly where a highly reflective surface is not desired and where the laminate contributes other benefits. In these applications, a uniformly pigmented interlayer is obtained from the manufacturer and the laminate can be prepared by the conventional process. We will also look at some processes that are used to modify glass for specific uses such as the application of thin-film coatings for solar radiation control and tempering and laminating for safety glass. In the last section of this chapter we will examine how glass-ceramics are produced.
