Another source of information that already has been mentioned is the QCPE.2" Its primary focus traditionally has been on the research community, but some of the materials can be useful to the instructor. For a source of computer software aimed exclusively at the educational community, one can best turn to the Journal of Chemical Education Software. On a subscription basis, one or more diskettes are released each year for both the IBM and Apple Macintosh platforms. (In general, a given software package is not released on... [Pg.157]

Besides the worldwide WPI database, Derwent provides on the ORBIT system the USPatents database, a bibhographic file of patent front page and cl aim information for U.S. patents since 1971. Derwent also produces a biotechnology database, GENESEQ, that indexes sequence stmetures of proteins or nucleic acids disclosed specifically or genetically in patents. This database is searchable with special sequence software on the InteUiGenetics system, and is a new addition to STN s database catalog. [Pg.54]

Most new hardware and software development in the EMCS market now aims at utilizing the full potential of EMCSs and at making the information obtained more usable and accessible. This accessibility has created a secondary benefit with a greater potential for custonier/utility communication. In many ways the EMCS evolution and market penetration in the industrial, commercial, and to a certain extent, residential markets, has equaled that of the personal computer. [Pg.464]

The goal of this book is to help you understand the procedures which are necessary to successfully produce and utilize a calibration in a production environment the amount of time and resources required to do so and the proper use of the quantitative software provided with an instrument or commercial software package. This book is not intended to be a comprehensive textbook. It aims to clearly explain the basics, and to enable you to critically read and understand the current literature so that you may further explore the topics with the aid of the comprehensive bibliography. [Pg.210]

Expert systems appear in some ways to be the "classic" application of Artificial Intelligence. An expert system is a kind of personal advisor that engages the user in a conversation with the aim of providing help on a specialist topic. In sophisticated systems, the interaction between the expert system (ES) software and the user may be so natural that the user almost forgets that it is a computer rather than a human that is holding up the other end of the conversation. As developers of an ES usually do their best to create software that can participate in "intelligent" conversations, in order to enhance the user s confidence in the system, expert systems can seem the most human and friendly side of AI. [Pg.203]

Installation qualification is aimed primarily at new instruments. This is the stage when the checks are carried out to confirm that the instrument received is as specified and correctly installed in the selected environment. This includes both hardware and software. It may be convenient to use a check-list approach to this phase as that ensures everything is checked. This stage covers the installation up to and including its initial response to power, if that is relevant. In addition it may be appropriate to repeat aspects of IQ following relocation or upgrades of instruments. [Pg.123]

The problems of this collection require numerical or graphical or sometimes analytical methods of solution. There is a large number of books and software on these topics. An outline with examples of these methods is the aim of this chapter. It is expected that the student will have access to some equivalents of the software used here for the solved problems and listed subsequently. Some of the work can be done with a programmable calculator, but not as easily as on a PC. [Pg.12]

The detailed tasks for Fault Management and Network Expansion are now rewritten to use these tools (see Figure 7.12). The old network expansion tasks are replaced by new procedures, but both the old and the new achieve the same high-level aims the new tools provide a new refinement in which portions of the high-level tasks are performed by software tools. This is a good case for separating the detailed and abstract views of the business. We can then easily deal with the different realizations of the business processes, including those that involve software. [Pg.326]

The aim must be to invest in the development of a component library as a capital asset (see Figure 10.1). Like any investment, this one requires money to be spent for a while before any payback is seen. A conventional software development organization requires a considerable shift of attitudes and strategy to adopt a component-based approach. Like all... [Pg.408]

Something like 70% of work on the average software design is done after its first installation. This means that an approach, such as reuse, aimed at reducing costs must be effective in that maintenance phase and not just in the initial design (see Figure 11.1). [Pg.478]

The aim of the graphics software, (tMod, threeD), is to enable the user to rapidly examine a large number of two- and three-dimensional scatter plots. At present the program is capable of handling up to 120 variables with up to 200 observations for each. [Pg.347]
