Sodium swimming pool cleaners

Sodium bisulfate, NaHSO, is a convenient mild acid and is safe for uses as a household toilet-bowl cleaner, automobile-radiator cleaner, and for swimming pool pH adjustment. It is used for metal pickling, as a dye-reducing agent, for soil disinfecting, and as a promoter in hardening certain types of cement. 

A 5—6% sodium hypochlorite solution is sold for household purposes, of which the largest use is in laundry. Solutions of 10—15% NaOCl are sold for swimming pool disinfection, institutional laundries, and industrial purposes. Solutions of various strengths are used in household and industrial and institutional (I I) cleaners, disinfectants, and mildewcides. A small amount is used in textile mills. Sodium hypochlorite is also made on site with 30—40 g/L available chlorine for pulp bleaching, but its use is decreasing in order to reduce chloroform emissions (see Chlorine oxygen acids and salts). 

Sodium hypochlorite is one of the best disinfectants known, capable of killing bacteria, yeasts, fungus, spores, and even viruses. Because it is an excellent disinfectant as well as a bleaching agent, it is used in many household cleaners. Sodium hypochlorite is also used to disinfect water supplies and swimming pools (although calcium hypochlorite in powder or pellet form is often used as a substitute, due to the convenience of its solid form). 

Household chlorine bleach is a dilute solution of sodium chlorate(i) (sodium hypochlorite). It is prepared by absorbing chlorine gas into cold sodium hydroxide solution. More concentrated solutions are used to disinfect drinking water and swimming pools. Bleach should never be mixed with other household cleaners. With bleach, acid-based cleaners produce chlorine and ammonia-based products produce toxic chloramines, for example NH2CI.
