Sodium nitrite: diazotisation with

Cotton is dyed in a bath containing Glauber s salt and a little soap or soda, and the shades produced vary from dark blue to bluish black, about 6 per cent, of dyestuff being necessary to produce a maximum effect. The diazotising is effected by a bath of sodium nitrite acidified with hydrochloric acid. The developing-bath varies according to the shade required. Resorcin, y8-naphthol, and phenylenediaminc produce blacks of various shades blues are obtained with naphthylamine ether and mixtures of these developers produce blacks of every conceivable shade. [Pg.79]

The solution of the aniline hydrochloride should be cooled to 5°C., and this temperature maintained throughout the addition of the sodium nitrite solution. External cooling has to be maintained, otherwise the heat of the reaction would cause the temperature to rise, with the consequent decomposition of the diazonium chloride and the production of phenol. If, on the other hand, the temperature is reduced to about o , diazotisation becomes extremely slow and unchanged nitrous acid may remain in the solution for an impracticably long time. [Pg.183]

The experimental conditions necessary for the preparation of a solution of a diazonium salt, diazotisation of a primary amine, are as follows. The amine is dissolved in a suitable volume of water containing 2 5-3 equivalents of hydrochloric acid (or of sulphuric acid) by the application of heat if necessary, and the solution is cooled in ice when the amine hydrochloride (or sulphate) usually crystallises. Dissolve 36 g. of p-toluidine in 85 ml. of concentrated hydrochloric acid and 85 ml. of water contained in a 750 ml. conical flask or beaker. Dissolve 46-5 g. (45-5 ml.) of aniUne in a mixture of 126 ml. of concentrated hydrochloric acid and 126 ml. of water contained in a 1-htre beaker. Cool to 0-5° in a bath of ice and salt, and add a solution of 36-5 g. of sodium nitrite in 75 ml. of water in small portions stir vigorously with a thermometer (1) and maintain the temperature below 10°, but preferably at about 5° by the addition of a httle crushed ice if necessary. Difluorodiphenyl. Bis-diazotise a solution of 46 g. of benzidine (Section IV,88) in 150 ml. of concentrated hydrochloric acid and 150 ml. of water by means of a solution of 35 g. of sodium nitrite in 60 ml. of water add about 200 g. of crushed ice during the process (compare p-Fbtorotoluene above). Filter the solution and add it to a filtered solution of 85 g. of sodium borofluoride in 150 ml. of water. Stir for several minutes, collect the precipitated bis-diazonium borofluoride by suction filtration, wash with 5 ml. of ice-cold water, and dry at 90-100°. Place the dry salt in a flask fitted with an air condenser, immerse the flask in an oil bath, and slowly raise the temperature to 150° (Fume Cupboard ). When decomposition of the salt is complete, steam distil the mixture collect the 4 4 difluoro-diphenyl which passes over and recrystallise it from ethanol. The yield is 21 g., m.p. 92-93°. [Pg.612]

An alternative method of removing the aniline is to add 30 ml. of concentrated sulphuric acid carefully to the steam distillate, cool the solution to 0-5°, and add a concentrated solution of sodium nitrite until a drop of the reaction mixture colours potassium iodide - starch paper a deep blue instantly. As the diazotisation approaches completion, the reaction becomes slow it will therefore be necessary to teat for excess of nitrous acid after an interval of 5 minutes, stirring all the whUe. About 12 g. of sodium nitrite are usually required. The diazotised solution is then heated on a boiling water bath for an hour (or until active evolution of nitrogen ceases), treated with a solution of 60 g. of sodium hydroxide in 200 ml. of water, the mixture steam-distilled, and the quinoline isolated from the distillate by extrsM-tion with ether as above. [Pg.829]

Chlorodiphenyl. Diazotise 32 g. of o-chloroaniline (Section IV,34) in the presence of 40 ml. of concentrated hydrochloric acid and 22 -5 ml. of water in the usual manner (compare Section IV,61) with concentrated sodium nitrite solution. Transfer the cold, filtered diazonium solution to a 1 5 htre bolt-head flask surrounded by ice water, introduce 500 ml. of cold benzene, stir vigorously, and add a solution of 80 g. of sodium acetate trihydrate in 200 ml. of water dropwise, maintaining the temperature at 5-10°. Continue the stirring for 48 hours after the first 3 hours, allow the reaction to proceed at room temperature. Separate the benzene layer, wash it with water, and remove the benzene by distillation at atmospheric pressure distil the residue under reduced pressure and collect the 2-chlorodiphenyl at 150-155°/10 mm. The yield is 18 g. Recrystalliae from aqueous ethanol m.p. 34°. [Pg.928]

The cymidiu sulphouic acid is then diazotised in the usual manner by treating with sodium nitrite in acid solution and the diazo body reduced with alkaline tin chloride solution, or with formic acid and powdered copper, or with other relatively gentle reducing agents. The 3 or 5 cymidin sulphonic acid gives by the above process one and the same cymene sulphonic acid, viz., l-methyl-3-sulphonic-4-isopropyl benzene. [Pg.255]
