Sodium ferrate

Other ferrate salts include calcium ferrate [35764-67-1], and sodium ferrate [13773-03-0]. The magnetic moments of these materials are 2.63.0 X 10 J/T (2.8-3.2 ), which is consistent with the expectation of two unpaired electrons. The [FeOJ ion is an extremely strong oxidizing... [Pg.437]

Sodium nitrite has been synthesized by a number of chemical reactions involving the reduction of sodium nitrate [7631-99-4] NaNO. These include exposure to heat, light, and ionizing radiation (2), addition of lead metal to fused sodium nitrate at 400—450°C (2), reaction of the nitrate in the presence of sodium ferrate and nitric oxide at - 400° C (2), contacting molten sodium nitrate with hydrogen (7), and electrolytic reduction of sodium nitrate in a cell having a cation-exchange membrane, rhodium-plated titanium anode, and lead cathode (8). [Pg.199]

Preliminary to the preparation of the gel of ferrous hydroxide, it will be necessary to prepare a solution of sodium ferrate, NazFeCh. This can be done electro-lytically according to the directions in Exercise 22. [Pg.170]

The filtrate containing the sodium ferrate is transferred to a 250-ml. beaker, which is put in a water bath at 20°, and 100 ml. of saturated potassium hydroxide solution is added with stirring. Stirring is continued for 5 minutes, after which the suspension is filtered through a fritted-glass filter of medium porosity and large surface area (centrifugation may be substituted for filtration here).f The filtrate is discarded. [Pg.165]

In order to make the walls of the iron pot passive a small amount of alkali chlorate (some 20 kg per 8 000 kg of caustic) is added to the melt. The iron which in spite of this measure dissolves in the caustic in the form of sodium ferrate Fe(ONa)s, is reduced by an admixture of sulphur to give ferrous sulphide which is separated by settling together with other impurities, especially sodium car-bonate. The melt is left standing and cooled to 350 °C. It is then siphoned or pumped by an immersion pump directly to iron drums where it solidifies. Flaked hydroxide can be also obtained if a water cooled rotating drum is dipped into the melt. A thin film of hydroxide will adhere to the rotating drum. The film solidifies and is scraped off with a thin knife. (See Fig. 108.)... [Pg.306]

When iron is made the anode in a concentrated solution of caustic soda or potash, a low current density (about 0-001 ampere per sq. centimetre) being employed, the metal is oxidised to the alkali ferrate 5 md passes into solution. Sodium hydroxide acts more rapidly than botassium hydroxide, probably on account of the superior solubility bf sodium ferrate. [Pg.54]

On passing a current of air into a hot, concentrated solution of sodium hydroxide containing ferric hydroxide in suspension, an appreciable quantity of iron passes into solution without colouring the liquid.2 On standing for several days the liquid becomes turbid owing to separation of ferric hydroxide, but is readily clarified again by warming. Probably sodium ferrate is formed in solution. [Pg.125]
