SODDY, FREDERICK (1877-1965). A British physicist who won the Nobel pnze in chemistry in 1921. His work was concerned with radioactive elements and atomic energy. His concept of isotopes and the displacement law of radioactive change is basic to nuclear physics. His education was at Oxford and Glasgow. He later worked in Canada and Australia. [Pg.1489]

Soddy, Frederick (1877-1956) British Physicist Frederick Soddy was born at Eastbourne, Sussex, England, on September 2, 1877, to Benjamin Soddy, a London merchant. He was educated at Eastbourne College and the University College of Wales, Aberystwyth. [Pg.248]

In 1962 the first chemical noble gas compound, formulated as XePtFg, was synthesized by Neil Bartlett. This result spurred intense research activity and led to the discovery of numerous xenon and krypton compounds. In 2000 the formation of the first argon compound, argon fluorohydride (HArF), was reported by Leonid Khriachtchev and colleagues, see also Argon Cavendish, Henry Helium Krypton Neon Ramsay, William Ruthereord, Ernest Soddy, Frederick Strutt, John Xenon. [Pg.856]

Rutherford won many awards for his work as a scientist and teacher. He won the Nobel Prize for chemistry in 1908 and was knighted in 1914. In 1919 he became the Cavendish Professor of Physics at Cambridge. He was made Lord Rutherford of Nelson in 1931. Rutherford died at Cambridge on October 19, 1937. see also Bohr, Niels Marsden, Ernest Soddy, Frederick Thomson, Joseph John. [Pg.1125]
