Soda ash process

The basic Solvay process remains the dominant production route for soda ash. Its continued success is based on the raw matedals, salt and limestone, being more readily available than natural alkaU. AH soda ash processes are based on the manipulation of saline phase chemistry (6,7) an understanding of which is important both to improving current processes and to the economic development of new alkaU resources. 

This is usually prepared by either a base-exchange method using sodium zeolite, by a lime-soda ash process, or by the addition of sodium hexametaphosphate. In addition to the bacteria derived from fhe mains water, additional flora of Bacillus spp. and Staphylococcus aureus may be introduced into systems which use brine for regeneration and from the chemical filter beds which, unless treated, can act as a reservoir for bacteria.

The boiling of fats with ashes was recorded as early as 2500 b.c. Commercial soap-making was a widespread art in the Middle Ages in Europe. The invention of the soda ash process by LeBlanc in 1791, and the discovery by Chevreul in 1811 that soap was composed of a mixture of fatty acids paved the way to modem soap-manufacturing processess.1,2... 

Sodium Sulfate A single-hearth furnace is used, like that shown in Fig. 23-40g. Sodium chloride and sulfuric acid are charged continuously to the center of the pan and the rotating scrapers gradually work the reacting mass to the periphery, where the sodium sulfate is discharged at 540°C (1,000°F). Pans are 3.3 to 5.5 m (11 to 18 ft) in diameter and can handle 5,500 to 9,000 kg/d (12,000 to 20,000 Ibm/d) of salt. Rotary kilns also are used for this purpose. Such a unit 1.5 m (4.9 ft) in diameter by 6.7 m (22 ft) has a capacity of 22,000 kg/d (48,000 Ibm/d) of salt cake. A pan furnace also is used, for instance, in the Leblanc soda ash process and for making sodium sulfide from sodium sulfate and coal.

This method is similar to the Soda-Ash process. The difference consisted of g a solution of sodium sulphite (16 -17% Na SOj) added with ammonia gas bubbling it to 2% free NHj. The solution should have pH 5. The pH value to 8.5 after mixing the solution with TNT (15 min). The solution contains onium nitrate, sulphate and sulphite. Free sodium sulphite causes the form-n of a red colour in the slurry of TNT with the aqueous solution.
