Social workers case study

A concrete example relates to the environmental levels of e.g. PCB, dioxin, pesticides or mercury, or air contamination including small particles. These have been associated with impaired perception, intelligence and mobility in children, entailing impaired earning ability and enhanced social inequity. Several case studies have indicated a loss of around 5 IQ points in a population due to hazardous chemicals, which might mean about a 10% loss of income or about the same loss of worker productivity (Trasande et al. 2005, IFCS 2003a). [Pg.185]

To date, simple studies such as Dziegielewski s (1991) lend added support by providing more evidence for psychosocial interventions that can assist individuals who suffer from mental health difficulties. In addition to psychosocial intervention, particularly in more serious cases, medications continue to be used to supplement the treatment regimen (Schatzberg Cole, 1991). The participants in Dziegielewski s (1991) study wanted more information about medication and wanted to know how and why they were being used. It is essential that social workers be versed in the common medications that their clients are using in order to help the individual and the family learn how environmental, situational, and other psychosocial factors can impact the intervention process. [Pg.8]

The process that classifies injuries as Nil, PPD, or PTD is imperfect because workers have the best information on the true cause and extent of their injuries, workers have the financial incentive to exaggerate injury severity, and firms have the financial incentive to classify injuries as unrelated to work or less severe than the injuries are. One study of Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) found that a second evaluation team would reclassify one-fifth of eligibility rulings (Parsons 1984). Providers of WC face a more complex decision process than in the case of SSDI because injuries compensable under WC need to have occurred in the course of employment. [Pg.151]
