Social Chapter

In many cases disciplinary actions will involve discussion with the relevant trade unions. This will depend on many factors including whether unions enjoy full negotiating or representational rights with the company. In most countries of the EU such rights are enshrined in the Social Chapter but not all countries are signatories to this part of the treaty. Negotiations with trade unions will be lead by the HR function. A Manager needs to be aware of the procedures to be followed within the company and not take unilateral action. [Pg.49]

On the evidence, the Social Chapter is needed more urgently in Britain than in most other European countries. The UK has one sixth of the total European Union popttlation but a far higher proportion of the EU s poor and imemployed. Britain has the worst child care facilities and poorest parental leave provisions and the biggest but least protected part-time workforce in the EU. [Pg.175]

CBs, like OPs, can cause a variety of sublethal neurotoxic and behavioral effects. In one study with goldfish Carrasius auratus), Bretaud et al. (2002) showed effects of carbofuran on behavioral end points after prolonged exposure to 5 pg/L of the insecticide. At higher levels of exposure (50 or 500 pg/L), biochemical effects were also recorded, including increases in the levels of norepinephrine and dopamine in the brain. The behavioral endpoints related to both swimming pattern and social interactions. Effects of CBs on the behavior of fish will be discussed further in Chapter 16, Section 16.6.1. [Pg.217]

We will concentrate in this chapter on venoms of social Hymenoptera which are certainly responsible for more than 99% of insect sting-induced anaphylaxis. [Pg.142]

The evidence base for clinical decisions based on cost-effectiveness for the affective disorders is less clear than for schizophrenia. In bipolar disorder the primary effectiveness of the mainstay treatments, lithium and anticonvulsant pharmacotherapy, is undergoing considerable revision (Bowden et al, 2000). Until this is clarified, cost-effectiveness studies are probably premature. Nevertheless the cost burden in bipolar disorder is qualitatively similar to that in schizophrenia, with in-patient costs being the primary burden and associated social costs in treated patients. The drug costs are even less than those for schizophrenia. In Chapter 5 John Cookson suggests there is little economic evidence to drive prescribing decisions. The in-patient burden does not seem to have altered with the introduction of lithium. The only drug-related study (Keck et al, 1996) showed an obvious difference in treatment costs only when lithium was compared with sodium valproate. Since these are both cheap drugs this is unlikely to influence clinical decisions. The main question is what impact... [Pg.94]
