Sneezing powder

The first irritant compound used in shells by Germany in WWI. Shells contained lead balls embedded in this compound. Called dianisidine niespulver (Niespulver is German for sneeze powder).

Asclepias fruticosa L. [lubetjane, milkweed] (Asclepiadaceae) stem bark concoction is used in the treatment of asthma. The stem bark contains alkaloids, flavonoids, polyphenols, saponins and steroids (15). The aerial parts contain cardenolides (55). The powdered leaf is used as a snuff for the treatment of pulmonary tuberculosis, producing violent and prolonged sneezing in the process (28). 

Cryptenamine itself is a white, amorphous powder which induces sneezing. Freely sol in ale, practically insol in water. Readily sol in dil acid soln [< Jg —25 to —40 (ethanol).

Amorphous, deliquescent powder which causes sneezing when dispersed in the air. Freely sol In dil ale. Foams easily when shaken with water, the foam being relatively stable. 

The best-known vanilloids are capsaicin and resiniferatoxin (RTX). Capsaicin is the compound in various types of hot peppers that gives them their characteristic hot and spicy flavor. It is used in a variety of products ranging from personal-defense pepper sprays to squirrel-proof birdseed. RTX is a powerful irritant extracted from a cactuslike plant. Euphorbia resinifera. The milky latex obtained from the plant is referred to in medical literature dating as far back as the first century. In these writings, it was described as a nose and skin irritant and as a treatment for chronic pain. In powdered form, RTX causes sneezing, a characteristic used by some practical jokers. 

Denis and Kinja (Amazonas, Brazil) baduhu-tsina ( deer snuff ) An unidentified pyienocarpous lichen on trees is used as a snuff. Yellow powder is collected off the surface of lichen for snuff. Used frequently and induces sneezing (Prance 1972 Milliken et al. 1992)... 

Aerosolized pentamidine is FDA approved for the treatment and prophylaxis of some types of pneumonia. Pentamidine administered as an aerosol must be reconstituted from a lyophilized powder. No studies exist to evaluate the potential carcinogenic, mutagenic, or reproductive effects of pentamidine. Studies among healthcare workers reveal uptake by those personnel who administer the drug. Side effects include coughing, sneezing, mucous membrane irritation, headache, and bronchospasms.

The effects may he expected to resemble those of inhaling an inert dust possible difficulty in breathing, sneezing, coughing. When heated, the fumes are highly toxic and may cause fume fever.
