Sm-Co system

Following this, the next industrially successful rare-earth magnet, the 2-17 type, was developed from the same Sm-Co system (Strnat 1988). There are several good review papers on these magnets (Kumar 1984, Stmat and Stmat 1991). 

The distillation train first separates the benzene/toluene byproduct from main crude styrene stream (8). Unconverted EB is separated from styrene (9) and recycled to the reaction section. Various heat recovery schemes are used to conserve energy from the EB/SM column system. In the final purification step (10), trace C9 components and heavies are separated from the finished SM. To minimize polymerization in distillation equipment, a dinitrophenolic type inhibitor is co-fed with the crude feed from the reaction section. Typical SM purity ranges between 99.90% and 99.95%. 

A total of more than 700 ternary borides have been prepared and characterized. Most of these phases occur in the RE-T-B systems. A maximum of 12 ternary phases has, for instance, been found in each of the Sm-Co-B and Ce-Co-B systems (see Figure 1). There are also ternary... 

Among the cobalt containing perovskites GdCoO, SmCoO, NdCoO, PrCoO, and LaCoO, tested as catalyst precursors for the partial oxidation of methane the Gd-Co-0 system showed exceptionally better performance for synthesis gas formation (Figs. 6A-6C). At 1009 K a steady-state methane conversion of 73% with selectivities of 79 and 81% for CO and H., respectively, is observed for the catalyst Gd-Co-O. The catalysts Sm-Co-O and Nd-Co-0, of lower activity, show similar steady-state methane conversions in the temperature range studied. On the other hand, the H, and CO selectivities are much higher over Sm-Co-O. 

The ternary R-Fe Co, Ni)-C phase diagrams Phase diagrams of the Ce-Fe-C, Gd-Fe-C, Sm-Co C and Y-Ni-C systems have been reported. The Ce-Fe-C and Gd-Fe-C systems are, respectively, representative of the light and heavy lanthanide systems (Park et al. 1982, Stadelmaier and Park 1981), forming two and six ternary compounds, respectively.

The isothermal section of the Co-Sm-C system at 900 °C is shown in fig. 22. From a comparison of the liquidus projection and the isothermal section at 900°C, Sm5COiiC2 occurs on the liquidus projection and decomposes eutectoidally above 900°C, and SmCoC2 melts congruently.
